So are you saying the pre 96 80s and the post 96 80s are the same stiffness, but the pre 96s are longer?

It's also a bit confusing when people say OEM and OME, I wonder if it's a typo or intentional. It's hard to figure out in some of the contexts.
 
robin hood. how long are the springs when they are installed on your 4runner?

looking at the whole thread that medtro linked to above it seems there is some variation in stock uncompressed and compressed spring heights. that makes sense after 100,000 miles plus.

i do not know if the guy used the front coils on the 4runner lift. I thought that is what he said. he bought all 4 coils.
 
I'm saying the stock Toyota (aka OEM) springs from 93 to 97 on US 80 series (which includes LX450) are the same. My statement that you quoted above said OME and that is what I meant though that wouldn't be real clear since I also referred to "stock length springs." What this refers to is the OME springs that are designed to replace stock springs and do not raise the truck (well, maybe .5")

The OEM shocks on the LX450s were softer than the OEM shocks on the Land Cruisers.

A footnote re the LX450 original rear springs. They are the same part number as the 96-97 Cruiser without the third row seat package. That is a bit odd as the 450's have a third row but none the less that is what the book shows. So, logic dictates that they could be softer than a "third row" Cruiser spring.
 
mystery seemingly solved. avoid springs off an lx450 or an 80 with no 3rd row package for your 4runner lift.

Does this mean that '96-'97 LCs have different rear springs, with the ones for the LCs that have third row package being stiffer? I'm NOW confused.

Indeed, this could explain a lot of things if the LX450's have a different rear spring than an equivalent 3rd row Cruiser.

Robinhood's tenacity may yet pay off with a new 80 Series fact. :o

Okay, so this leads me to ask a question...

Did any FZJ80s make it to the States w/o 3rd row seats? I know that in the case with the FJ80s this would be true, but what about the FZJ80s?

Aside from the 3rd row seats springs, are OEM 80 springs the same between the FJ80 and FZJ80? In other words, are the non-3rd-row springs the same springs as those on non-3rd-row FJ80s?

I would guess (educated guess) yes but I have never seen or heard of one. I have heard of US spec 80s with no sliding rear windows, no sunroof, 97's without leather, many without racks & running boards. I haven't *seen* all of these but the reports came from reliable sources (e.g. no sunroof.)

Some (a very few) came as special order so any option could be deleted.

I see.
Which explains the lack of sliding windows on his 80. It's the only one I've seen with solid panes on both sides.

See if you can get them to measure a Toyota Land Cruiser (w/3rd row) rear spring diameter. I have it from a reliable source that they are 16mm. Your LX springs are 15.4mm and that's a big difference.

Mine went in the dumpster about 3 years ago.

Looks like Cebby is has one that is 16mm and one that is 15.4mm. A couple notes here: 1) he bought 2 sets from slee, and gave one pair to his friend. Perhaps they were mixed up at some point. 2) I only measured 1 coil when I reported 15.4mm. I'll go measure the other one when I get home tonight.
 
The '96 Cruiser springs I have measure;

The tall one;
15.5mm, has two green paint stripes on the second wrap from the bottom and 1 green on the third.

The short one;
15.2mm, two pink and 1 yellow.

My '96 LX rear springs went into a buddies '90 Runner, but the stripe code on the '96 Cruiser and '96 LX front springs are different.
 
Update.

I picked up some 93 rear coils and took some measurements. The numbers actually don't say much, infact they're pretty close.

The only obvious difference I see is that the 93 LC coils have a shaved, flat top while the LX coils just end, as you can see from this picture

(The springs are lined up with the concrete crack and the measuring tape shows the difference in height. LC coils on left, LX coils on right)

So what did I find out? Well I threw the 93 LC coils on the 4runner fully expecting to have the same height as LX coils, but to my surprise I found I had gained 1 inch in height. That's what I was looking for all along. I've even put on about 400 miles with a trip to pismo dunes...same height now.

So in summary, the dimensions are similar but the way the spring terminates is different. The LC coils gave me 1" more lift than the LX coils.

I never thought of that comparison btwn lexus and toyota....Too bad it doesn't matter anymore now that I run OME.
