Drove the 62 pretty far yesterday and about 15 minutes into the drive we were going about 65mph and the i heard the dreaded high pitch whine sound...after about 15 seconds it went away but it came back a couple of minutes later. What am i hearing? Is it a sign my tranny is going out? I am going to drop the pan and clean the filter and put in some synthetic tranny fluid and see if that does the trick. But i want to know what am i hearing?

was your wife in the car at the time? :D

(Ok, man, sorry, I have no idea.)

Never had that problem. Tell us what you find in the filter. I haven't changed my fluid since I bought it and wonder what I would find in my filter.

OK, i dropped the pan cleaned the filter (wasn't much there) and replaced the gaskets and put in some ATF synthetic fluid and man what a difference. Shifts like butter!! I am very impressed with synthetic ATF fluid. I haven't dirven around enough to see if i hear that noise but once it comes back, if it comes back i will report.

What was the color of the old fluid? looked a little dirty or burnt? What brand of synth did you use? How many miles on your truck? Thanks!

Hey Archie, the fluid was new as i put in new fluid about 300 miles ago when i rebuilt my t-case so i couldn't tell a difference in the color. I use ATF Synthetic Dextron 4 from the toyota dealership. It was $5 a qrt so kinda pricey but so far i love it. took in 6 qts and i still need a lil' bit more in there. My 1990 FJ62 has 192K on the original tranny and engine and runs great.

Mine has 210k and pretty much runs good too. It has that common "flare up" that happens once in a while when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear but I don't mind it too much because it seems normal. Might that noise you heard be related to the transfer case, seeing that was newly rebuilt?
