need some experinced answers, have done search already
how shuold it feel?
our 88 fj62 goes and shifts well but lags under hard acceleration. cant even get tire spin on gravel, also trans does not kickdown.
when floored in second gear it wil just lug all the way to 3800 and then shift

also is torque converter fluid self contained or is it in the trans fluid circuit. if it is low will it slip?

so am i slipping or is it just normal trans behavior

Hello,
Do you think the problem comes from the engine or the tranny? If your engine revvs, starts, and sounds ok then odds are its the tranny. When you put the trans in gear and accelerate hard, does the engine feel held back as if you were towing a big boat or trailer? If it seems to be the engine, then check the carburetor and ALL of the vacuum system, also check the ignition system (dont forget to check the spark plugs,) check the engine timing, fill the gas tank at a different gas station, and check the air filter. If its the transmission, then I can't help you, because I don't know much about that. I would check the fluid level.

You probably need to adjust your kickdown cable. Mine started shifting funny also. I could tell the kickdown cable was gummed up - it wasn't smooth feeling when I pulled on it. I did a tranny (passive) flush and also replaced the kickdown. It shifts great now.

You should do a search on "kickdown" here and over at the Birfield archives. Also do the search on tranny flush.

Good luck.

My 89 had early shifts and really lugged. I manually shifted it and it performed great. My post here indicated to adjust the kickdown cable. I did so, what a difference. It now keeps up with traffic off a light and redily kicks down when I need it. I have mine set to shift from 2nd to 3rd at 2800 rpm under normal accelleration. Its easy to do and you will really notice the improvment.

Bill
