I have a 1989 FJ62, my AC belt started squealing so i decided it was time to change all the belts. I got the first two off pretty easy but I cannot figure out how to loosen the AC belt. Can someone point me in the right direction? I wish there was a video but I can't find anything on youtube. I am stuck in the middle of the job and with this being my DD i need to get done ASAP.

This pic may help.

Loosen the nut on the front of the idler pulley slightly to allow it to slide, then loosen the tensioner bolt (from below, clockwise to bring the pulley down I believe).

Thank you, the pic and description helped. I was having an issue with the tensioner bolt..my mind wasn't comprehending which way to turn it and I couldn't get it loose. All done, new belts on now. No more squealing!

Do you have to remove the belt? My AC belt is chirping, but the belt is fine. Probably just needs tension. Where do I start? Going out of town next and it’s annoying. Not using the AC is not an option with 100° temps.

You don't have to remove the belt to tension it. If your belt is old and shiny, there may be no practical amount of tension that will prevent it from chirping. Also, the idler pulley bearing may be failing and making noise. If you do remove the belt, be sure to spin the pulley freely and see that it spins smoothly with no noise.

How far is the belt deflecting now when you push down on it? Not sure on FJ62 but the 60 series FSM I think calls for like 1/2 inch deflection when testing the belt tension.

I would push fairly hard on the belt with my thumb on the largest open free run of the belt (which is awkward to do). Deflection should not exceed 1/2". A/C belts on 60 series are skinny and seem the most likely to get loose (in my experience). How old is the belt? Shine a flashlight on the belt and look for shinyness or rotting/cracks on the back side. If you see this, your belt is suspect.

Also, you are in TX, so the belt sees a ton of heat. At some point, it might be easiest to get a quality new belt (Bando, Mitsuboshi, Gates) from Rock Auto or your dealer, and install that. Remember that anything involving the belt drive on a 60 series is a giant pain, as far as access, etc. If you need to pull the radiator for some reason, or do all other belts, you might as well do the whole stinking mess at one time. While the belts are off, spin all tensioners for smooth operation, and check that they don't have excess wobble (bearing runout). All our trucks are ancient/high miles, so all items should be viewed with suspicion.

How do I adjust the idler pulley for the fj60 Ac belt? Also I see how some are smooth and some have a grove for the belt to go around it. Is it supposed to have a grove or smooth. My AC bekt keeps coming loose.
