Does anybody local need or want a transfer case/transmission out of an fj60? I just pulled mine this last weekend and want it out of my garage. I have the 2f too but the mounts actually sheared off the block so it'd be tough to reuse. If somebody wants to take the whole lot i'll let you have it all for free, otherwise if i gotta split stuff up i gotta charge. I really just don't feel like messing with it or having to pack and ship stuff to anyone on mud.

TC and Gearbox question

Is that a H41 or H42? I've got an early 84 (4/84) so my mounts are H41 specific unless I want to do some welding.

Howdy! I thought that there was NO difference in the cases between H41 and H42, other than the length, when they made them the same as an H55F by adding the "dead space box" on the rear. Was that 85? John

Pretty sure the transmission mount has to move - I've looked at the write ups on the H55 conversion, and in (month unknown)85 to 87 its a direct bolt in, but the earlier models I think require a trans mount move, a large hole in the tranny tunnel for the linkage, and new/rebuilt driveshafts to the correct lengths.

If I had the spare cash, I'd have the H55 - but been working on other things on the rig first.

I have a spare 85 H42 and split case for my 60 and it has the dead space box you speak of. It is 21 inches from the front of the transmission surface to the tin cover on the back of the transfer case.

I can take other measurements if it would help.

Is the T-case still available? If so please PM me as I have a gentleman from Canada staying with me whose T-case needs a few parts and he would be interested in the whole thing.

Thanks

sorry guys ive been busy and haven't check this in a few days. As I posted earlier the transfer case and transmission are gone. I do still have the block complete but its useless unless you would know how to weld cast iron or could devise some way to fix the motor mount. I assume everything in the motor is still in good working order, but I don't know.

How's the project going? Gonna make it in time?

I still have the 2f if anybody wants it, you can come get it out of my garage for free. One motor mount is sheared off and I don't know the condition of anything else really, I'm assuming its all trashed. If you do in fact want it PM me, I promise to be checking more frequently than last time, sorry about that.

There is no difference. They added a spacer because of the h55. They wanted everything as far as drive lines to be the same for production reasons. I have taken out a H41 and put in a H42. You just need to carry over the drive shafts.

Nice to know that for certain. One less thing to dink with in the eventual H55 conversion I have planned. Wish I had a later model FJ60......would like to have *something* be an easy, drop-in, mod.

Mikeb came and picked up the motor this morning so everything is gone.

H55 swap return on investment questions

Considering I have done the swap.

You've got several 60's in the sig line, which one(s) did you do the 55 swap on? Mine is a 4/84 so it doesn't have the spacer - so its shift linkage change, tranny tunnel cut, and driveshaft work. Was it really worth the lower granny gear, and higher highway speed?

I put in a 4spd from an 87 into an 82, which is essentially the same swap. The spacer is on the end of the tranny so does not affect trans mount (although the mounts are different, tranny placement is the same). As far as linkage, I used the linkage from the 87 t-case, the tranny has no linkage. There is no tranny tunnel cut needed. I used the drive shafts from the 87, but had to keep the flanges from the 82, perfect time to replace u joints. The reason I did this swap was because I neede a new tranny, and that's what I had available, I also wanted to see what was involved when it came time to do an h55. Very simple, and I don't understand why people on mud make it sound complicated. -Mike:beer:
