I want to relocate the intake to the passenger side for my snorkel installation. Does anyone know if the HJ/BJ air cleaner is a direct replacement for the FJ 2F?

Or does anyone have any suggestions for rerouting the intake to the passenger side for a snorkel? (aside from adding a 10ft hose that wraps around the engine bay).

I might be wrong, and I haven't tried it, but I've heard that you can take the bottom part of your breather and just turn it around so that it points to the rear left instead of the front right of the engine bay. It would be worth trying, instead of buying a whole bunch of crap that may or maynot work.

I dont understand this. The stock 60 series snorkle mounts on the pax side. Why bother putting a snorkle on the driver side? All 60 series trucks had there filter element on the pax side didnt they?

Even with a snorkel, won't water sneak in lots of places when the engine is fully submerged?

Thinking of the air can itself, top of the carb.... etc? I wouldn't trust my air filter housing to be air tight.

The Doc is right. Unless you have a diesel, you've got to do tons to that gasser to make it water proof.

Good luck.

Right, I'm relocating the intake to the passenger side for the snorkel.

I don't plan on scuba diving in my cruiser. I am more interested in the cleaner, cooler air the snorkel will provide but this will also give me the ability to tackle some water crossings I would not otherwise be capable of.

Oh, ok so educate me Casey. Do gasser 60/62's have the intake on the drivers side?

Strange. What's up with that?

Now, I'm the first guy here to admit to wanting to put a snorkel on my 80 almost entirely based on looks alone.

I don't think the cooler/cleaner air argument is valid. The way the intake tube is routed, it's getting air direcly from the outside too, right out of the grille. Bringing air down from the roofline won't get you anything that's cleaner or cooler.

Yes it does allow you to go a bit deeper than a stock 60 into large puddles and rivers, but maybe only 8 inches deeper. Then we start dealing with issues of waterproofing the intake and electrical stuff...

But don't be discouraged from doing the mod, I for one think snorkels are totally bad @ss, and would put one on my auto-xer if they made it.

ok, ok... I just want to look cool.

But really, how can air outside of the engine bay not be cooler and cleaner?

A Safari snorkel relocates your engine’s air intake point from a relatively low and vulnerable position under the bonnet to a much higher and safer location where a constant source of cool, clean air is available. -ARB

That ARB shot looks cool, but I've been on dusty caravans and the dust stream was never that uniform (I like how the snorkel sneaks out of the dust). A snorkel would have done me no good on the different occasions.

Now, I would definately put a snorkel on my truck if 1. I had the $, and 2. if I wanted to drill a nice sized hole in my fender. I like the bling bling points, but is it really worth the bling? Unless your going submersed, and do a whole lot of other water proofing mods, think twice about spending the money.

Spend it on something more valuable i.e. usefull like, toward a locker, dual battery set up w/ wring harness, tune up, all of which cost about equal to the snorkel.

If you have the money, then do it! so I can be jealous.

Well, the way I look at it, the air intake on my 60 has a hose that runs to the outside air right? So you're sucking in cool clean air aren't you? I will grant you that it IS in a more direct path for dirt coming off the car in front of you, but it's a much shorter route for the air to travel to your carb, and just as cool as what you'd get out of a snorkel.

Also, the 'RAM AIR' effect might help performance some...

Doc, how can you say that? There is a hell of a lot less DUST at the snorkle intake level than the stock location.

I think the dust thing is the issue.....probably is a heck of a lot cleaner up there but the temperature thing bugs me. The difference in temperature is probably very nil, less than a degree difference compared to when an intercooler is fitted.
I'm gonna put one on for the dust factor (and put a pre-cleaner on it) and the tough look and for the hope that one day I'll get some water when I can actually use the bugger.

I bought my snorkel purely on the "bling bling" factor. I knew it was a overpriced toy that would not be useful, or so I thought.

It keeps your filter significantly cleaner when on the dusty trails and because I have a diesel (no ignition to worry about) I can safely cross deep water.

The biggest advantage is keeping the dust out. Compared to my wheeling partners that are cleaning there filters twice a day, I never touch mine. :)

Worth the $$$$$ I paid, nope.....but it's still cool, and they work :D

Thanks Dude.

Yes, I can see the dust being less up there...

A little OT but - I don't have that intake tube running from my grille to my intake, its just picking up right in the engine bay. What size is that tube? Where does it end, right behind the grille? I'm thinking I can save a few bucks by fabbing my own instead of ordering one from toyota. I'll take a picture if I'm not making sense.

I put a snorkle on my 60 because it would look cool and allow me to bathe the truck and myself in local rivers rather than wash it. Then I realized it would not be enough to keep me waterproof. So, then I used the cooler air/less dust argument to help justify the cost. Now we find that this is debatable. So, I guess I am going to go with the "harder for the chipmunks to get into the A/C element and make a nest" argument. When someone asks what the snorkle really does, I can just say it squirrel proofs the carb.
