Does this sound familiar to anyone:

Start FJ60 in the morning. Sometimes difficult to start and can easily die just getting out of the driveway. Sometimes have to pull the choke to get enough power to get up the driveway (pull choke all the way and vehicle dies when sitting at idle).

Bucks a bit moving out of 1st and into second then third. Driving is very rough.

In 3rd or 4th gear, sometimes dies when coming to a stop. Noticed Battery voltage reading drops from 14 to 12 volts while stopping. Also, rpm and speed readings can flucuate wildly.

Vehicle used to be able to come back up to speed even when doing a "rolling stop" in fourth gear. Now it seems to have little or no power (have to bring it down to 1st or 2nd gear).

Start vehicle at lunch or quitting time and get same poor results (even on hot day). Vehicle can run badly when hot or cold. Problem seems to be very sporadic.

History of vehicle: After initial purchase, it had issue with vehicle dying when coming to an abrupt stop. Replaced exhaust manifold (cracked) and rebuilt carb.

Ran very solid until stopping for gas one day and putting some carb/fuel injector mixture in with the gas (pre-mixed out of pump). Ran trough several tanks of gas and problems still existed with bucking and poor performance.

Replaced the plugs (fouled badly) and distributor cap. Carb also adjusted. All other seemingly obvious items seem to be ok. Still running badly.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Have you changed your fuel filter? Do you have fuel 1/2 way up the sight glass in the carb?
Have you checked all your vacuum lines? There's lots of vacuum gremlins that could be causing leaks. A vacuum gauge and the emisisons factory service manual would be a good place to start.

That's the first place I would start.

Plugs gas fouled or oil fouled?

Found the problem!

I pulled off the air intake cleaner unit and found it to be very dirty (lots of carbon). It was especially bad just over the carb. I cleaned everything using carb cleaner. I also used some compressed air to clean the air filter. I took it for a test drive and still had the poor acceleration, stumbling, and lurching issues. I took it back home and pulled off the air intake assembly hose. I wanted to verify that the air intake diaphram was functioning properly.

I looked but could not see the flap. All I could see was plastic. I pulled the plastic out and IT WAS THE Plastic TOP FROM A CAN OF CARB CLEANER!

I immediately suspected that the dealership had left this in my vehicle since I had found the actual can under my hood several weeks ago (after they had done some work for me).

Has anyone ever heard of this being done intentionally for any reason?

Well, I pulled out this cap (which had done a great job in restricting at least 90% of the air flow to my car) and the drive to work this morning was greatly improved.

Now, it appears as though my clutch is slipping. I shift gears and the rpms increase with no increase in speed. Anyone want to help me replace my clutch in austin, TX?
