hey all

just picked up another 60 (85) last night for $900!! body is shot (east coast snow truck) but it's running pretty good, drove it about 125miles to get it home, no probs except......

it's ildling around 1500-1600. I've read about how to set the idle screws, but I wonder if that's the issue or not because it'll drop down when I put it in first and start off, and sometimes when I let off the gas or take it out of gear while rolling it'll drop down to around normal (900 or so)for a sec then it's like it revs back up on it's own. seems like (and I'm dumb and inexperienced fyi) if it were just the idle set high it wouldn't drop down llike that then pop back up?

any and all suggestions are most welcome.

cheers and thanks in advance!

The ac idle up might be engaged. Does the AC work and was it on while the idle was high? There is a diaphram mounted on the front of the carb which increases the ilde when the AC is turned on. Check the operation of the choke cable too. Pull the cable and watch the linkage move on the carb.

hey norcal thanks,

so I swear I did a search first, but since I made this thread I've found a few previous ones with similar issues so.....

I tried pulling up on the gas pedal, doesn't really do much.

ac doesn't work. the ac compressor is the one below the power steering pump right? it's no adjusted correctly, the belt is barely on there super loose. the nut to loosen the thing and adjust is totallly seized but that prob wouldnt' have anything to do with the idle.

I did find that tapping the gas pedal pretty will get the idle to go down for a sec, then it pops back up.

I will try to figure out where the choke linkage is on the carb and get someone else to pull on it while I look. what would I be looking for exactly? would I be lubing it if it seems sticky or the like?

I got the diagram from a previous post showing where the idle set screws are, which is which and the basic procedue for setting them ( damn this forum is the SH*T) but does the thing with being able to tap the gas and have it drop down then go back up seem like it would be related to the idle set>?

thanks !!!

so I pull on the choke in the cab and I can see the lever working on the carb. seems ok, but I"m not sure what I'm looking for.

on top of the carb is the air intake right? it's the large piece of metal connected directly to the top of the carb. seems to go to where the air filter is. it's connected with two wingnuts to the air filter and one nut to the carb. anyway..... on the front side of this part are 3 small black hoses. the one closest to the passenger side goes forward and connects to what looks like some sort of sensor ( small plastic part that has some electrical connection and then another small black hose coming out the side of it. anyway...... the hose that goes from the air intake thing to that sensor thing aint connected. the little plastic part that the hose slips onto on the sensor part is busted off. looks like someone had some goop to hold it together but no more.

does this sound like something that would contribute to the high idle?

I got a stupid non factory book for the vehicle which so far is beyond useless.

thanks!
