I finally got some motivation after having Steve over here yesterday to mount sliders; I started the repair of the FJ60 quarter panels that I had cut out (several years ago) soon after I obtained the truck.
I started on the passenger side. I cut one piece of sheet metal approximately 22" in length and made an arc from the "dog-leg" behind the passenger door, to what remained of the fender well on the quarter. Then I cut several rectangles and welded them to the factory metal and the arc.
It's not a perfect factory match, due to the contours of the original metal in that area, but it is close enough to close the visible gap, and prevent moisture and debris from entering the cargo compartment.
I hit it with some kyrlon spray paint to prevent surface rust, in preparation for the next step; lay some wire mesh on the inner side and some body filler on the outer side. Then I'll move down to the lower portion of the quarter and close it where I previously cut it away.
