Hello everybody. I'm new here, but plan to be around awhile. I have a quick question for members, and would really appreciate the help. I bought a '76 FJ55 a few years ago. It is a 4 speed standard, 3 speed transfer case (2hi, 4hi, 4lo), six cylinder gas engine.
The drivetrain is in good working condition. The motor runs, but runs poorly. It burns oil, and is low on power. I pulled the valve cover off to adjust the valves, and discovered that the tube that brings oil to the top and spreads it to each cylinder on the top end is broken, and it hasn't been getting oil to the outside cylinders for quite some time. The body is in poor shape, and is beyond repair. Floorboards rusted out, window frame on drivers door broken off of door, severe rust in many places.
Surprisingly, the interior is in real good shape. No rips or tears in both the front and rear seats. The dash is crack free and everything electronic works.
The other day I found a good deal on an '82 BJ60. It's a 3b diesel, 4 speed standard, 3 speed transfer case. It's got it's share of rust, but the floor boards are solid and the frame appears to be straight and serviceable. The drivetrain is in good working condition, with the exception that the motor needs a new diaphram in the injection pump, and maybe a head rebuild(valve seals I hope are the cause of the blue smoke at idle), and a valve adjustment. I got it for $500, so there has to be a few things. That will come in time.
My question is, would most of the drivetrain parts from my FJ55 fit on the BJ60? Diffs of course would depend on gear ratio, if they are the same. Do they share the same tranny and transfer case? How about small things like heater motors, windshield wiper motor, etc.? Any help is appreciated.

Anyways, if anybody cares to respond with their knowledge and experience, I'm very thankful. Eric

on the diesel motor the input shaft on the transmission has more splines and will not bolt up to the gas engine, anything electrical will work the diffs will work if the but if you are going to be running the diesel keep what ever is in there. the transfer case will work but i am sure that it is a 4 speed case. hopes this helps you

I believe the 55's share the same running gear as the 40 series. 60 series axles are slightly longer, I can't remember if it's just on the one side or not. Wow, helpful eh?

But have faith, someone with great knowledge will chime in soon.

Thanks for the replies, guys. One thing I didn't say was that I was planning to use parts from the '76 FJ55 to fix the BJ60 in the future. Sounds like the tranny won't work, due to the spline count on the input shaft. Oh well, if I ever do have tranny trouble, maybe I can trade someone. Thanks again, Eric

60/62 Axles are 3 inches longer than 40/45/55 series
Mini truck axles are 1.5 inches longer than 40/45/55 series but 1.5 inches shorter than 60/62 series.
BJ series has 3.73 gears to keep the RPM's down on the diesel. Your FJ55 will have 4.11 assuming the gears are factory stock. The tranny and t-case are different in both vehicles. the FJ55 will have an earlier style 4 speed. The actual difference is minimal; its mostly cosmetic. The t-Cases are totally different. The BJ60 will have a split transfer case (strongest) while the FJ55 will have an old style 4-speed case that much resembles the old 3-speed case.

Hope this helps
Goodluck

Oh, and Welcome to MUD :flipoff2:

Thanks for the help, guys. It's too bad it sounds like nothing is the same, drivetrain wise. Oh well, use what I can, and trade the rest for stuff I can use. Thanks for the welcome, Zulu:flipoff2:, you've been a big help. Anybody need FJ55 stuff?

As far as Axles, I would definately use the wider axles, and your third members will swap out with each other. The only issue you will have is drive shaft flanges; however, this is easily solved by using half FJ55, halve BJ60 drive shafts since they have the same spline in the slip portion of the shaft. At the end of the day, you're only limited by your imagination and wallet. You can make BJ parts fit in FJ's and vice versa. Don't let what "spossed" to be there limit what you want to do.

Goodluck

About the only thing that will fit without modification is the wheels and tires and some front end stuff.

If you end up parting out the '55 let me know as I need a few odds and ends for my '76 FJ55.

Thanks for the help again, guys. I've been away for a bit, hence the late response. I'm not afraid to "bastardize" the BJ60 a bit with different parts makeup and such, so long as it runs and drives. I'm sure all the parts already on the BJ60 will last a long time yet, but I'm just checking.
It's good to hear the third member will fit, using the 60 axles. Just to be sure I understand correctly, the axles are the same size and spline count, but different length?? If so, that's good, as it seems the axles are tough and would likely last a long time, with the way I plan to drive it long distances to hunt and fish, and once there do some mostly minor offroading, with the possibility of serious, should I need to. Only thing is, like you said, the gears from the 55 will be a lower ratio, but if I have the parts and I come to need them, I have them.
Cruiser guy, if you have BJ60 parts and wish to trade them for FJ55 parts, I would like to do that. Do you need any emblems, or interior parts? My 55 is fairly complete with things like that. It might be a bit of a PITA to trade bigger things, but arrangments can always be made. Let me know if you're interested, thanks, Eric.

What BJ60 parts do you need? My BJ60 is also my daily driver so I'm not parting it but I do have access to various parts. My interest at this point is the interior parts for the '55. I'm attempting to get mine to look as stock as possible but with the turbo-diesel. https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-...972-september-potm-cruiser-guy-guatemala.html

The diff will bolt in but the diff parts may not be interchangeable. The pinion flange spline count is different for one.

There's really very little that will cross over other than some axle parts.

Hello, I need the diapram for the injector pump of the 3b. I also need new valve seals for the same motor. I could send pics of the interior parts you need, if you let me know what you're missing. The interior really is in surprising shape for the year. The seats are also in surprising shape. Let me know, and hopefully we can work out a deal. Thanks for your time, Eric
