Hi All, would appreciate some advise on installing a 5.4 boss engine and 4speed auto from a ba xr8 into an FJ45. Pretty good with most of the mechanical/fabrication side of things - have hoist, workshop etc...but not well versed on keeping and adapting the 4wd train for the falcon transmission. I have a T5 gearbox from a xr6 turbo if it is an easier conversion but I would prefer to have the FJ as an auto as it will eventually be my daily driver. Any info would be greatly appreciated :)

.....it's the same 5.4 litre 4v that is fitted to the Lincoln navigator...

Just for information if anyone else is considering this conversion, the transfer case from any 80 series and 70 series with the 1hdfte can be adapted to suit the transmission on the xr8.
I have opted for the HF1A transfer case out of a DX 80 series without the AWD.....thanks to Wholesale Automatics for the information and bigger cudos if your adaption kit actually works

I'll be posting picks along the way :)

I looked at doing this when searching for an engine for my conversion. I decided against it for a couple of reasons.
Mainly because it is a very large DOHC engine and had reservations about it fitting under the bonnet neatly.
I wanted to keep the H55f gearbox and wasn't sure the box could handle the power.
Also there wasn't much info regarding getting the computer to work and have the immboliser bypassed.
I will be very interested in watching this conversion!

Cheers Blazer! Engine is no bigger than an old Clevo so this one will not be a problem....Hit a little road hump with the info on the transmission/transfer case......computer isn't going to be much of an issue but avoiding a turbo 400 etc looks like its going to be one unless i'm willing to go manual......ill keep you posted :)

Finally found an option I can run with - having a bell housing adaptor milled up be Dellow conversions for a rebuilt and beefed up 4l80e (basically a turbo 400 with overdrive) this will have a compushift stand alone selectable CPU, full manual, auto and lockup modes. The 4l80e will be adapted to an 80series hf1a part time transfer case that is just about to get a rebuild stresses over on that one! Spent a bit more than I wanted but i think will be much easier to live with.

Now, how to work out the best way to fit this set up into the FJ (and restrain myself from slapping a supercharger on it!)

What's happening to the old 2F?
If its up for grabs, I might be interested in it.

Hadn't given it much thought mate, there's a couple of forklift guys who have asked about it but I'll let you know when it's out. Prob be in the next couple of weeks as I'm still using the old girl to truck stuff around

Cheers

Oh, and one more thing...What about the fan shroud? Mine hasn't got one and keeping temperatures under control in traffic can be difficult without it.

You might consider a centered rear end. I believe ruffstuff makes a housing that is centered for a toyota diff. Or ford 9".
That way you don't have to spend all the money on adapters, and you can run a ford or gm t-case

Did think of that but
Still would involve buying another transfer case and rearranging the diff. The good cases aren't as readily available over here

Dellow make good gear. I used them to adapt my 1UZ to the H55F gearbox in my BJ42. I'm also looking at supercharging. Can't help it when I've got a xr6 turbo with 500rwhp.

Hasn't got one mate....not sure they came out with one? Came out with an F engine anyway, previous owner put a rebuilt 2f in it a couple of years ago so he could pull his hay trailer around....prob best off with a big thermofan if your having those type of overheating problems anyway. I own a couple of auto parts stores so I can hook you up with a decent one if you want

And the fun begins!

Brakes now sorted! Going for the 60 series front end and the stock shoes for now as I will be using a remote vh40 booster, due to the engine size. Herrod Motorsport will reprogram the XR8's ECU to remove all of the security functions so I can us it as a stand alone ECU for the engine. Seriously.....you disconnect the bloody stereo system on these things and the engine doesn't work!! :bang:
As for the suspension, I am thinking of keeping the original leaf springs but removing one or two leaves and then installing a bellows air suspension as a helper. I am thinking that this will give me a better ride in normal driving and then I can blow up the bellows as needed. If there is anyone out there with experience with this I would love to her your thoughts?

What year truck is that? I'm going '64.5 with the R/T and the under windscreen vent.

Very interested to see how you go...

Have you given much thought to cooling? I have been having issues keeping a 308ci V8 cool, not sure how a bigger motor (and possibly supercharger) would go? The biggest problem is the standard radiator is pretty small compared to the radiators in most modern cars. There is only enough room for a single 16" thermofan, so keeping it cool might be tricky. Although costly, you might have to end up with a PWR radiator and SPAL extreme thermofan.

Will watch with interest....

Also, have you given any thought to oil starvation? Not sure about that motor specifically, but i know some engines can have issues with oil pickup/starvation when doing extreme angles. Might need to look into a larger capacity sump (Maybe try ASR) or look at an oil accumulator.

Cheers

1970 FJ45
Only been used as a farm truck its whole life 115000 kms, had a 2f conversion because the old F struggled with a load of hay up the hills :) ......and yep! Under-screen air conditioning
