I've got a couple of FJ45SWB p/u's and would like to put a 5 speed in one of them. Thinking H55F but would like to keep the transfer case hydraulic shift actuation.

Can I do that? Would it require a different transmission choice? What I'm really after is an OD for hwy speeds and I'd prefer not to deviate too much from what one of the original vehicle's engineers might have approved of had the option been available to them.

Vacuum actuation? :hhmm: Whatever it is I'd like to keep the lever on the dash.

Well if it is a stock vacuum shift transfer case you are talking about, the actuator on the nose cone of the transfer case only controls the front output of the transfer case. It does not have any direct connection to the range selection portion of the transfer case.

The range selection lever on the dash could be used to control the range selection of the split transfer case behind the H55 five speed transmission, however you will be required to modify or fabricate a new link between the pivot on the rear engine mount on the passenger side and the transfer case, and possibly also the link on the top of the split transfer case that controls the range selection.

As far as the front drive and retaining the vacuum control:

The FJ-62 used a vacuum control front drive actuator, so perhaps you could find the front section of a transfer case off a 62, and hopefully it will work with your H55.

I do not know how else you would get the vacuum control for a split transfer case, as they are significantly different than the one-piece Land Cruiser transfer case, and I have not ever seen an H55 with a one-piece case behind it.

You could use an NV4500, and then get an adapter to mate the one-piece case up to the rear of that transmission and then you could keep your vacuum controlled transfer case, and get the five-speed transmission.

What size tires are you currently running?

I looked into retaining the vacuum actuator that comes on a FJ62 split case to run on a FJ40 with a H42 but it sticks out too far. I'm not sure if the extra length of the H55 would do it but I'm thinking not.

Doing a minor rubber overdrive now to 9.5 x 33 BFG All Terrain T/A's. That'd be good for about a 10% gain but it's sure not much at today's highway speeds. More would be better.
