To help the next FJ40 newbie on the powder coating stock wheel color code search quests, I offer the RAL color codes based on those mentioned in the ih8mud threads since 2005:

RAL 7023 -- Concrete Grey

RAL 7033 -- Cement Grey

RAL 7037 -- Dusty Grey

RAL 7040 -- Window Grey

While I noticed a few mentions for RAL 7033 in the early year posts, the more recent threads settled upon RAL 7037 and 7040.

For what it is worth, I went with RAL 7040 (Window Grey).

I used ansi 49 gray. I can't find an associated RAL number to this color. I think it's lighter than the OEM color. It was definitely lighter than my 79 roll bar OEM gray.

I happen to have a 'survivor' wheel I got for $5 from a local dealer back around 1980 or so. It was one of literally dozens of wheels they had as take offs from new Land Cruisers for buyers that wanted mag wheels or wagon wheels. I used it for a spare for a few months and then stored it in the basement for the past 36 years or so. In other words, the finish is almost virgin.

I've been considering powder coating for a while and @Jarhead0802 posted some RAL codes, so I decided to get on it. The local powder coater does a lot of industrial cabinets and had all kinds of RAL codes on hand. I took the following pictures today, outside in the sunlight, but unfortunately the clouds gave the light a golden hue. In any event, here are some pics of the various RAL color chips vs. my OEM wheel.

The powder coater and I both agreed that the RAL 7036 was closest to the OEM grey, particularly when viewed indoors

Sounds like "Mr. Mom":

Yeah? Are you gonna make it all RAL 7040?

Yeah. RAL 7036, RAL 7040. Whatever it takes!

Nice post but I believe the wagon wheels posted above came on '79-end of run models and were supposed to be white................maybe @JohnnyC can chime in on this.

Yes, the wagons came on 81-newer FJ40, powdered with a "dirty white" color, like Cygnus on the bezel. Same wheel in chrome was on FJ60 and SR5 chrome package minitruck.

I like the darker greys, they feel closer to my memory of what our OE wheels looked like 30 years ago, before sun & ozone bleached out the color, or maybe my memory is bleached out....

As noted above 79 didn't come with wagon wheels. I picked up some 60 series wheels in a trade and did not want chrome or white on white so tried to match the roll bar grey.

Wheel back from powder coating. Powder coast primer (white) then RAL 7037 7036. (fixed a typo on 3-2-17)Original paint OEM wheel on the left, dated Aug 1978.

Taken outside, cloudy day in Massachusetts. The OEM wheel is covered in dust.

RAL 7040 powder coating.

Will post pictures when BFG tires are mounted and on the rig. Deciding on 31" or 33" which would replace the current 32/11.5/15 tires.

With no other Toyota Grey on the FJ40, the lighter color should be fine.

Sweet! I also ran 32/11.50/ 15 on my stock steelies, not optimal but never had a problem. I was looking for 33's when I needed to replace my tires, but at that time There were only two! Had to settle for 31/10.50/15's.

Those look great! I'd be interested in seeing pics of the 32x11.50-15 vs 33x10.50-15 comparison.

im gonna go 7042 i like a slightly darker tone

Any update on the pics for this color?

I've got 32x11.50-15 bfg all terrains on mine and I'd like to see a set of those 33 swampers on there. I also saw an older thread on here where someone used Massey Fergason grey and it looked great. However I'm getting ready to sand blast and powder coat my wheels and this will surely help. How wide are the oem wheels?
