Hi, can anyone tell me what this control (circled with red in the pic. below), in a 1974 FJ40, does?

Thanks.

It looks like the choke pull knob:

Thanks, according to the BJ42 owner's manual it's the choke button (although the "normal" postion of mine is "out," and it doesn't anything when pushed (it just springs back out) so maybe it's been disconnected)... Apparently the dash lights come on when you turn the head lights on (I have a soft-top, and I can't get the dash lights to turn on no matter what I do, so maybe the bulbs are burnt out)...

Damn, that looks just like a dash light switch....

I figured a dang PO had mounted it in the choke position.

Besides, who puts unlabeled things in their Cruisers? ;)

Ain't right I tell ya...

Yeah pull the cable out and replace it with an OEM choke cable. You can soak it in oil and work it loose but it will just freeze again without use...

Thanks, I'll look into getting a new (or used) one of these as well (if I can't fix it using oil)...

Don't worry about it Coolerman, I still don't know what "fresh pull" is supposed to mean... I'm guessing it's short for: "if you want fresh air (from the outside rather than recirculated) pull this knob" but I'll have to do some more reading I guess...

Do diesels have chokes?;)
Maybe an idle control?

original post says it's in an fj40...not bj;)

I guess I was confused as to why you would consult a BJ owner's manual if you had a question about an FJ. And evidently........

If you don't have a BJ, then I guess you will have to choke it.

Look behind the dash, use a mirror. What is connected to the back side of it? Cable or relay like a headlight switch?

I'll look into that tomorrow afternoon...

Lol... Sorry I think I meant to say "Land Cruiser" owner's manual... Mine didn't come with an OM so I was reading the one found here: Master Portal - forums.bauchan.org - Toyota Handbooks - page: 1. It's an all around "Land Cruiser" OM but it says (on the site and in the filename) that it's for a BJ42 LX so I was calling it a BJ OM  I apologize for any confusion that may have caused you...

If you don't have a BJ, then I guess you will have to choke it.

Mine starts really well without choking so I don't know if I'm gonna have to but I figure I should get it repaired in case I ever have to (winter is around the corner)...

Well, I couldn't see what's connected to the back of it using a mirror so I'm guessing it's probably a choke pull (since that's where the choke pull is supposed to be according to the manual)... The headlights are controlled by a pull on the left hand side of the steering wheel, and I'm guessing that the dash lights are just burnt out, which is why they don't come on...

Thanks for all the input,
Rob

Ya they are quite the little bird. very agile and quick, literally run circles around a Blackhawk.

I was a rear door gunner in Iraq working for a private firm. Gotta ride in one everyday for 6 months. Best contract I've had, and the only way I would go back there. That's my legs 'dangling' from the lead one.

are you sure the dash lights aren't just turned down? turn the headlight knob...that's the potentiometer for the dash lights.
