I found some time the last two nights to mess with the fj40 for a little bit. I got the hard top, doors, and ambi doors off. It got me excited to start driving it. I could not get the headlights to work, all of the other lights on the truck work including the lights in the front with the turn signals that come on when the headlights should. I am going to try to find the ground for the head lights tonight after class but should I be looking for anything else?
I will be ordering a filler tail gate for the rear and the mirrors that mount to the windshield from coolcruisers.com along with a repair manual. Should I get the toyota manuals or should I just pickup the haynes manual for now? Thank you for any advice!

Double check that the headlight filament is not burned out or the connector isn't unplugged to start with. If that doesn't work start tracing the wires and double check the fuse panel.

All I have ever used was the Haynes manual and it has been good enough so far.

If you run the mirrors that mount to the windshield, the screws that hold the hindge to the body and windshield frame are a royal pain in the ass to get out without stripping the screw. Use lots of PB blaster and possible an impact driver to loosen them up. We actually snapped 1 or 2 of the weld nuts up in the cowl off when we tore my dads off for repaint, also stripped some that we had to replace.

Wiring for the headlights start at the fuse box, to the main light switch, then thru the high/low beam selector switch (aka Dimmer Switch) then to the headlights. Should be an easy trace.
As it's both headlights, I doubt it's a ground issue (but I've been wrong before).

No luck with the lights tonight, I am assuming the headlights are on the fuse with the rest of the lights and that fuse looks good. The connections at the switch look good and the connections on both lights look good. When I bought the truck I was told that the lights work sometimes and then stop working sometimes. When I first got it they did work and then they randomly stopped one day. Any other ideas?

Sounds like the headlight switch maybe bad . try to wiggle it side to side to see it they come on.
