You should be able to paint them vs recovering. I would call an upholstery shop and ask.

When I bought my seat covers I had the guy that installed them paint my headrests to match the covers. They didn’t match well at all so I took it to a body shop I believe and had them work on it to match the seats.

Likely they feel if they are going to take the time, they want to be sure it’s worth it…..crazy stiff today with some service companies ..especially in this region of the country. Seems like no shortage of bigger jibs
