i've got a 12/74 fj40. and i'm missing the key for the locking fuel door. until now i've just pried it open with the ignition key, however i'm about to have her painted and would like to quit damaging the paint around the door as i try to get the door open, plus i risk bending the key. cruiserparts.net had some locks for sale, but they told me they were out of stock. has anyone figured out any other solutions to the fuel door lock? i'm not too worried about folks stealing my gas so, i was considering rigging a magnet to keep the door closed (i just didn't want it flopping open every time i hit a bump) surely someone's got an easy and cheap suggestion for me!

Find one that is parting out

On my '78, it's the same key as the ignition. A locksmith could make a key for you. He may be able to make it work with your existing key.

If it's different than a '78, SOR has some NOS key blanks: http://www.sor.com/sor/cat144.tam?xax=27239

X2 on the ignition key fitting the gas door. I have a 73 and the ignition and fuel door use the same key. The other round head key is for the drivers door and rear hardtop hatch lock. You used to be able order new OEM fuel door lock and ignition switch keyed the same. I don't know if you can still order them keyed the same or not.

better yet check out the wrecking yard. you might find a lock out of something else that will work. also you might want to look into just replaceing the lock. as soon as i figure out how to deal with the tuffy pushbutton lock, everything that takes a key on my 40 will be a medeco lock. one key does all.

I have a complete set of new locks for my 1978. I found a YouTube video for replacing the ignition lock but would like to get the fuel door open to replace that lock. I have lost the original set of keys sometime since 1991. I also wanted to control the heating grid from the ignition not that I have a Cummins R2.8.

What is the best way to get it open with out damage to the body or door?

I went out and pried open the door with out damage to the paint or the latching mechanism. Just bent the latch inside that I tapped back with a hammer and the lever on the lock it's shelf is bent but that is not an issue since I have a new lock that is keyed the same as the doors and ignition locks.

I have never picked a lock and found that the door was easy to pry open with doing damage to the door and just tapped the part that engages the lock.

Toyota Matt did not recommend drilling the lock.

The Issue is now resolved I can replace the lock.

What ever works for you. Most locks are not hard to pick or rekey either. I think soon will come again the day that you can't buy new parts - think Great Depression. Skills and knowledge are the lightest things to pack on your back. Having tools and the skills to use them is priceless.

I bought a full lock set from him. Ignition, doors, ambulance door, fuel door.

2 keys. Back door is a funky little weird key.

I'm planning on checking with Toyota to see if i can get a blank with the plastic end. My hope is it'll be one less rattle
