SOLD

I have a rear bifold door for and early fj40. It has some surface rust but otherwise in good shape. It has a single glass pain that looks good. The door has both latches. All three hinges move freely. Asking 300 plus shipping, located in Northern New Mexico.

I do have a pretty nice later model bifold hatch that has a solid lower panel. I’m holding on to it for now because I paid more for it than I should have. However, I will consider selling it for a “premium” price if you’re looking. I was a bit too quick to buy parts for early cruisers after I bought my 1962 project. I thought my 62 hatch was missing the exterior handles and jumped on a complete bifold hatch for a later year before figuring out that the 1962 didn’t have the handles. Anyway, that’s the reason I would have to get a premium price for it (but I’m willing to lose some money on it to an extent).

Another thought … you’ve seen the lower condition hatch I posted on Mud. Depending on the condition of your lower panel (other than the hole cut for a window), it might be possible to use the metal from my lower panel to replace the metal cut out in yours. I’d need to look at it to see if it would work. It does include the mounting holes because that hatch is the source of the exterior handles. Anyway, I could probably just give you that panel (you’d need to cover shipping) for free in the spirit of maintaining good Cruiser Karma.

I am getting a bit befuddled about what I really need regarding the rear panel. If there were no handles, all I need to do is substitute a solid panel for the bogus glass. It looks like that may be a solution at this point. thanks for your communication.

Yep, you bet. I’d be interested to know if you find out that the handles were not used for at least some 63 FJ40s. Every large window bifold hatch I’ve seen has had the handles. However, I can’t say I’ve seen more than about five total to date, so it’s certainly possible there was a version without the handles. The more I know about Land Cruisers, I seem to find that I have A LOT to learn!

Oh yes. I agree with that. I thought I knew a lot. Not so much in comparison. The fun is in the search...and an occasional FIND.

I apologize for the long delay in responding about the bifold hatch handles. Three things:

1) I forgot I had boxed these up and put them on a shelf for future sale. I didn't think I had made it that far with getting them ready to sell. I laser-cleaned them and coated them with LBS 3 corrosion resistant coating. I'll post more photos shortly, but here's the overall view of them.
2) I'm not so sure your hatch with the two windows is a custom job. I just purchased a bifold door from a friend that has the wider glass on top, the narrower glass on the bottom, and handles one either side of the narrower glass. I'll provide a photo. From the photos, it looks like a factory setup, but I may be wrong. I know someone who has a bifold hatch with the narrower glass in both panels, and I've seen an FJ45 with that type of hatch. Anyway, I'm kinda fascinated by the variation in these bifold hatches and am wondering if additional glass may have been an option at either the factory or dealership levels. I'm going to look into this.
3) These posts are obviously made by SturgeonGeneral. That was the original account I set up on Mud. Years later, I wanted to use a different email with the account, but I had trouble doing it. I decided to create another account (fishdoctor that is now NOTAGEEP) to try to make things simple. I thought I had correctly eliminated SturgeonGeneral, but I was wrong. I signed in recently with the email associated with that account by accident instead of NOTAGEEP. The passwords were the same, so it opened. I didn't realize until later that I had switched accounts. ANYWAY, I'm going to switch back over to NOTAGEEP since I can post more photos using that account, and most things I've done on Mud have been through that account. I'm saying all of this in case it looks sus that I'm going to switch accounts to post the photos I mention above. Both accounts feature my 1972 FJ40 "Crawdad" so that it's evident there's only one person involved here. Regardless, neither account has been flagged as suspect, and I'm happy to share evidence of mutliple transactions with folks that went very smoothly and legitimately.

I probably didn't need to mention all of that, but just in case!

Here are some additional photos of the FJ40 bifold hatch latch handles. One needs a little tweaking to make it completely straight, but that's minor. They are very solid, and I removed all the rust using a laser cleaner I bought over the summer (man, that thing is MAGIC). I'm asking $150 for the pair. Please let me know if you're interested or not, as I'd like to post them for sale if you want to pass on them.

Very best,

Reuben

Oh man!! You are adding to the confusion! I will have to re-inspect the lower window now. I am pretty sure the original owner did the replacement....but not 100% sure.

Reuben,

I will take them on the chance that they might be original to my cruiser. Can I send you a personal check? Wait until it has cleared before sending the handles. Contact via email please. shakerj279@aol.com
