I'm looking for an early FJ40 air cleaner assembly - the type that attaches to the carb via a center stud. I do already have the bracket that secures it to the head.

My shipping address will be in St. Louis, MO.

Thank you!
-Todd

Pinged @Dallas Todd for you on a possible source for a can.

I have a client here in CA who is abandoning a ‘69 carb with the stud air cleaner lid for an early ‘70s version. When his deposit get here, I will be happy to reach out to him and see what he’s doing with the old lid.

@Rigger might have one too.🤔

[PSA: the phones have been out at the shop since yesterday. Sorry for the inconvenience. If you need to get ahold of me, you’re going to need to ping me on an open thread.]

Thanks for the replies guys. The truth is I'm still trying to determine if this is the route I need to go. My truck is a '72 and has what I believe to be a '75+ carb on it from the previous owner. It has the center stud which is why I felt I should pick up the air cleaner that mounts as such. I have already picked up a bracket, which I was also missing.

Does anybody know if this style air cleaner will generally bolt up to this carb, or if there's a different year style I should consider?

What would be your recommendation @65swb45 ?

Believe the 69 two barrel carburator and air cleaner are a matched set. Would be sure the carburetor opening and carburetor height for the 69 carburetor matches the carburetor your planning on using.

wonder how the carb runs with the fuel line connected to the return side? versus straight in

How far along are you in the alteration process? Have you been inside this carb? How much do you know about carbs?

Do you know that your fuel line is hooked up to the return? Do you know that the banjo bolt has a restrictor in it? How do you plan to make a rod linkage carb work with a cable linkage gas pedal?

Thanks for the heads up on that guys, very good to know about the fuel line... The carb was installed by the previous owner, and it has been driving decently enough for cruising around town. When I purchased the truck I actually drove it 300 miles home like that - no noticeable issues. When the bowl is empty after sitting for a while it does seem slower to fill than I expect though, so perhaps that helps explain it.

Check out the sweet custom hose clamp linkage the previous owner came up with, complete with a 12" return spring that's attached to the fender apron:

@65swb45 I've had a '71 BMW 2002 for the last 5 years and learnt to rebuild and tune the Weber side draft carbs on that, but that is my first/only other experience. This FJ40 is my second, and am certainly learning about it's nuances as I go. I've discovered this truck definitely is a bit of a frankenstein...

I have considered getting rid of this carb and getting back to the one correct for my engine, but my budget so far has been focused elsewhere since this is the way the truck came to me and it's "working" for the time being. Getting my hands on a proper '72 carb + '72 air cleaner certainly sounds like the ideal path forward, but untangling the current setup hadn't yet felt like the path of least resistance. It's probably the right thing to do though, now that I'm looking over everything again and talking about it. To be honest, the main reason I'm even looking to change to a stock style air cleaner is to have somewhere proper to vent the valve cover to without having to be stuck with one of those little breather filters.
