Any of you Buds know the procedure and specs. for testing the ignition exciter for a 1978 to 1987 Land Cruiser?
I have power to the coil and ignition module but no spark at the plugs.:frown:
Any suggestions?

Hmmmmm. It's been a while. make sure your ground is grounded. I would recommend posting in the 60's section or 40 section.. If I remember right there are several wires there and its hard to tell which goes where! .

Thanks for the input, I will re post in the 40's section.

Well for the most part the FI install is done, there are a few lose ends like finding a VSS and looming up the wiring harness, but at this point it should run, but no spark.
I have a few more things I can check but it is starting to look like a new ignition exciter is required.

I will keep you posted

is this a new problem, or part of the swap.
i have found most times, at least on minis, the pickup in the dist goes south.

Yes this is a new problem resulting from my installation of the TBI system.
I made some progress today, was unable to find a wire from the ignition switch that remained hot during cranking.
Installed a temporary fix to provide power to the ignition during cranking. There is now a potent blue spark at the plugs.
I do not quite understand the ignition / starting circuit but a little more research may sort it all out.
Is it possible that a jumper from the starter energising circuit powered the ignition during start up.
The good news is, the pickup is working for now at least.

Thanks for the input gnob.

It's Alive!

Once provided with 12 volts when cranking It fired right up. Set the timing, Wow it never ran that smooth since I owned it, well I have not had it out of the driveway yet because of the later model booster and master cylinder installation. (have to bleed the system)
I expect there will be issues with the E Prom that will need some re programing.
Stay tuned for more trauma.

Al, as thorough as you have been on your build I think you ought to put together a write up for Toyota Trails and if not published put it here on mud.

Nice Work!! :)

You've done so much work on your truck, it deserves a write up.

Way to go Al, can't wait to see it.
