The challenges with the video will be many:

- unedited hours of footage is difficult to stomach
- if the video goes beyond one leg, uploading won't happen until after people finish the next leg - difficult to upload video remotely. Could basically have everyone buy a memory card and after their leg they could edit/upload - but it wouldn't be in real time
- photos can be done more real time since they don't require a ton on bandwidth to upload
- will there be a YouTube channel to upload the videos to?

I'm sure there are more challenges I'm not thinking of right now. I like the idea, just seems like the execution will be tough. Unless someone who edits video for a living can help - video can be uploaded to their Dropbox account or similar and then they can edit and post. But that is asking a ton...

I am thinking of just a clip of the handoff at both ends with just maybe a scenic attraction or two. Make the handoff, take your card and expect the recipient to put in a new card. That way each card holder can post a short clip of the handoff on the thread. That way you only need a very small card for each leg. Shouldn't be too hard as each driver does his/her own.

Who makes these? Where to buy? Best brand? My phone is just an old geezer's go-phone--no bells or whistles--I'm going to have to steal my grand-daughter's laptop for this----

Amazon has a ton of them. I had a more expensive Cobra one that I bought at Costco but it failed. Returned it but they had none left. Bought one for less than $50 and it works great.

I could do the whole Portland to Seattle leg but would prefer Portland to Chehalis (half-way) or Chehalis to Seattle if I could help it. 175 miles is a lot to ask my old bones to do. Considering it turns into 350 miles.

Let's do this the FJ40 way: Keep it simple.

While video would be great the "official" record should probably be still photos. Just about everyone has some way to take some sort of still pictures and can find a way to upload them. Expecting everyone to be able to buy a compatible memory card, get it in the camera, mount the camera, run the camera and eventually get the data off of the card and uploaded... me thinks this is not gonna happen...

Keep it simple.

If individuals want to shoot video and upload it... GREAT. (I probably will)

Even though a fall West coast leg doesn't look like a happening thing, I'm firming up plans to do a mini-leg regardless. Start in the semi-ghost town of Keeler on Oct 19 (friends there) head to the ghost town of Cerro Gordo (friends with caretaker), then over San Lucas Canyon and out to the semi-ghost town of Darwin on the 20th (friends there too) Then on to Panamint Springs (first look at my friend's transplanted boat) then on to one of the public lands cabins in Panamint Valley ((I am a member of CASSP) Probably head out the south end to Trona and on to Ridgecrest from there.

I will be in the 45 as I will be carrying firewood for the caretaker in Cerro Gordo, and a trash can full of art supplies for a sculptor friend in Darwin.

Just confirming, I'm good for receiving on Oct 9 at the Fall Gathering in So. NH and delivering on the 15th on Long Island with one caveat. I'm driving both ways to NH and back from LI. If I break something serious in NH there could be a delay returning. Hopefully won't be an issue.

If you break down I'll come for you with the trailer... you'll need to ride back in the 40 with the baton to keep it all official though.

I'm game if you pay any fines.

And is this offer good for the Moab trip?

What is the Moab you speak of Rich? And what did you end up doing about that self-clearancing pitman arm?

Getting a little off topic, so we should continue this discussion elsewhere, but there's talk about a GCLC trip out in the Spring and if I go I'm driving the 40. And no, but it turns out it's not self-clearancing. I spoke to the PO and the groove was cut in the frame to make clearance for the bolt. ;) It's on my list. I'll get to it before I see you again. And I hope everything worked out for you.

@hecrod , would it be possible to push the Charleston to St Augustine leg back a week? @ErikinSC and I got together over the weekend and discussed... He can't drive south on the weekend of the 6th and I will be out of town on the 12th... The experience is more fun as a caravan and we can both make a meeting with @mel lowe on the 19th (if he is good for meeting). This also gives everyone a week of "slack time" in case there is a problem. We can still meet @Booch and @David1947 on the 5th.

Either date works for me

GA- If we(sggoat/Captconch--others) make it out of Fl, don't see why we couldn't go the extra mile to make Atlanta(didn't talk to John about this yet, so just musing) My plan is to haul an old antique Rivet forge to Walter's Forge in Henegar, Al. on the trip. That's not far from Atlanta, so if the truck holds up, I (or we) will be there--pending confirmation----

Gary, Save yourself a trip to Henegar, just add that antique forge token to the briefcase. :hmm:

Did I miss a SoCal (San Diego area) leg. I'm in for a leg if that's the case...

Oh man, I thought I was meeting at the end of October... I will be with my wife in Chicago from Nov 8-15 for our 10th anniversary. I can pick up from @Booch the weekend of Nov 5th, maybe meet earlier in the week somewhere? @ErikinSC and @77wagon how are your schedules looking at that time? If Booch is cool meeting in Charleston on the 5th, I can run it down to Savannah on the 6th. Maybe in to North Florida depending on who can meet and where. @mel lowe how far north can you go on the 6th? Alternatively, I can head down on the 19th...

@CharlestonG8R OK... I made a handful of adjustments... see below and please confirm it works for you...

I'm still in for the 15th of Oct. hand-off in Columbus.....the "baton" on my end is now an old tool box I picked up at a swap meet the other day(@Cleg idea) Perfect for stickers and holding an assortment of mementos.

That baton sounds not only cool, but may be useful as well!

Regarding "the other" baton... @brian and I executed a flawless pass... now firmly secured in my '78!

Get ready to see it in numerous places in North America in the coming years!

What do you guys feel about an "official pose" or "handoff" picture. The initial one was via USPS, but going forward they will all be 40 to 40. Pictures of the 40's / Owners with the baton to "prove" the handoff took place??? :D

I'm in for Danville to San Luis Obispo (SLO). After we finish in SLO, I would likely head a little further south to Pizmo Beach to hit the massive sand dune park on the ocean to get my rig all sanded and salted. :)

I'm also good for heading to Tahoe from Danville. Although, I'll admit I had delusions of grandeur that my wife could drive her big SUV to Santa Barbara (family there) and then I could tow my rig home. Heading North in Cali is almost always into a wicked head wind. Btw, there are some great scenic routes to SLO (hwy 1, or the old hwy 25). But I'm not picky. Any road trip is fine with me.

@CaliFJ I added your name to "the map."

I'm just ready for this to make its way to Texas

@graham5david Added you as well!

@woytovich X2... and maybe combine the videos and post on youtube / MUD at a later point...

@DPV7070 Added!

Updates to the schedule as requested are highlighted below. This continues to be a go. Starting the weekend of October 8th... less than a month away! Thanks everyone for the flexibility... can't happen without it...

Still need additional coverage in Western TN and maybe NM for the immediate next Leg. As soon as we get that... the path is clear all the way up to the Pacific!

Sure, this works for me - and last I heard, Erik should be fine as well. Huge kudos to @sggoat for making the trek from South Florida to Atlanta! It's a real shame the 12th doesn't work, @ErikinSC and I could've met @mel lowe in Gainesville for the South Carolina vs. Florida game... Anyhow, this gives us 2 weeks to get the baton over to Deo. No problem, we can work it out with him.
