@brian I thought we agreed that I/we (the Long Island crew) would hand off to you on Sunday the 16th at a location TBD...

I have options to get the baton to NJ if you cannot make it in to Manhattan/Times Square.

Can you get to NJ sometime on or after Sunday the 16th?

Mark I will meet you in LI, and Bring Back to NJ on 16th.
Toll's are Only 1 way Right ? :-)

Keeping a watch out for what happens in the Michigan/Indiana region.

@kbahus Please reach out to @olive... he will be leading the charge through the area. It'd be great to have some presence from the Chicago area...

The west coast leg that I had envisioned for me will not be passable from probably early November until I believe May/June - Tioga Pass is 10,000' elevation so they close the road to traffic during that time period: Tioga and Glacier Point Roads Opening & Closing Dates - Yosemite National Park (U.S. National Park Service)

I certainly can do a different route but the road through there is so amazingly beautiful it would be a shame to pass on it. Or that can be saved for the 2nd Annual FJ40 Cross-Country Expedition...

@ginmtb We may not get there until the Spring anyway... see below. Sorry about that. That said, nothing prevents you from kicking off a "Pacific Leg" now in the Fall if you guys want to do it now? Think about it...

Can someone help me out...where's the "official" tentative schedule? Maybe @hecrod can update the first post with all up to date info?

Going forward, I will keep a copy of the current schedule in Post #1 of this thread...

So here's where we stand right now... some dates have had to shift due to availability / scheduling challenges. No surprises there.

upload_2016-9-3_11-30-14.webp

As you can see, the schedule now has us in Nashville TN in late November... where it's likely to begin a bit of a hibernation (it may also creep along through TN, AR and TX over the winter) before it continues on its way to the Pacific in the Spring. I think this is the best way to do this anyway...

I can tell you that the schedule through Charlottesville, NC is looking quite firm and solid. We may have to accept some flexibility after that.

  • @sggoat - now that the dates are firming up, could you share your draft schedule for the "Tributary Leg" from Key West to St Augustine? I know I'm looking forward to your Key West adventure...
  • @Bluegrass40 - aware of the fact that you are still tentative. Hopefully the extra time you've been granted above helps! And maybe someone else in the area signs up between now and late November.

What we need now is for the "baton holders" (@ordoman, @woytovich, @brian, @Shark56, @iptman, @Booch, @CharlestonG8R, @sggoat, @GA Architect, @Cleg, @olive, @Speeter, @Bluegrass40) to reconfirm dates work and to reach out to the "other owners" as listed on the last column above to begin to plan the specifics.

You, the Baton Holders, are The Key to this working out as planned!

I for one will be reaching out to @vt0u812, @Splangy and @ordoman to plan the weekend of October 8th. @brian will be sending me the baton soon!

And, just so that we can begin to "know each other and our 40's better..." What about if you share a link or two that best describe the 40 you will be driving on this ride??? This may make "this story" all the more powerful over time...

Charlottesville as in VA or Charlotte as in NC?

I'm good for that weekend!

Below is where we were last Friday. Just about everyone has confirmed routes and dates, with some potential changes around Kentucky. The most significant change is that we will attempt to reverse the TN to FL leg, to go FL to TN, which would then allow us to continue West towards the Pacific.

There's a realistic path to do this... I will update the schedule tomorrow late PM.

1st Leg - Maine to Key West
  1. Saturday October 8th - @vt0u812 (Central Vermont), @JohnnyC (Upstate New York), and @hecrod (Boston) meet in Portland Maine to kick off the Expedition!
  2. Sunday October 9th - @hecrod (Boston) hands off baton to @Cruiser_Nerd (CT) during Yankee Toys Fall Gathering in Southern NH
  3. Saturday October 15th - @woytovich collects the baton from @Cruiser_Nerd in CT.
  4. Sunday October 16th - @woytovich leads the Long Island entourage  (@woytovich, would you take the Lead in coordinating the Long Island Leg?) into NYC (specific location TBD). @brian collects the baton. @wizjim25 and @awynne56 can also travel here from the Jersey Coast. @RolandFJ40 and @shmukster... we will have to figure out a way to loop you into this weekend. Let me know of your preference.
  5. Saturday October 22nd - @Shark56 collects the baton from @brian in Northern Maryland.
  6. Sunday October 23rd - @Booch and @iptman collect the baton from @Shark56 in Southern Virginia (Norfolk?) or Northern NC.
  7. The baton continues South into Charleston SC during the week (I assume @Booch will do this?). It would be great to loop in @David1947 at some point in this section of the Leg.
  8. Saturday October 29th - @Booch meets @ErikinSC, @77wagon and @CharlestonG8R in Charleston SC. @Booch can of course, if needed, leave the baton with @CharlestonG8R at anytime during the week.
  9. Sunday October 30th - @CharlestonG8R (and others?) heads towards St. Augustine Florida to meet @sggoat, @Captn Conch and @mel lowe. @sggoat and @Captn Conch are coming South from Atlanta, where they have collected the "Michigan baton".
  10. @sggoat and @Captn Conch determine final timing down to Key West.

2nd Leg - Michigan to Key West
  1. Weekend of October 8th - @olive gives us a tour of MI, IN and parts of OH??? :D:D:D
  2. Saturday October 15th - @Speeter collects the baton from @olive , maybe somewhere near Columbus?
  3. Sunday October 16th - @Speeter hands the baton to @Bluegrass40 near Louisville KY. It'd be great to loop in @mtnbiker4evr13 at some point here...
  4. Saturday October 22nd - @Bluegrass40 hands the baton to @Tennessee80 near Nashville.
  5. Sunday October 23rd - @Tennessee80 hands the baton to @Cleg near Knoxville, TN
  6. Saturday October 29th - @Cleg hands the baton to @GA Architect and @Chris8760 near Atlanta. @Sig191144 maybe you can meet the folks near Atlanta as well?
  7. Sunday October 30th - @GA Architect and @Chris8760 hand the baton to @sggoat and @Captn Conch somewhere in Southern GA. These guys head South towards St. Augustine FL to meet @CharlestonG8R.
  8. @sggoat and @Captn Conch determine final timing down to Key West.
CaptnConch and I have a question about this--If we pick up baton in So. Ga. or No. Fl., then head So. to Key West--where does the baton go then?--Do we turn around and bring it back North? If so, where?

@sggoat The thinking was to treat the Key West to Northern Florida as a "tributary" to the main leg.

So you guys would start in Key West, drive North towards St. Augustine, where you would collect the baton from @CharlestonG8R... you will of course add to the baton (briefcase) any trinkets / memorabilia you deem warranted for your portion of the Leg. Then you would drive it further Northwest towards @GA Architect whom you would hand the baton to... you and @GA Architect would agree on the specific hand-off point.

Would that work or would you like to see it done differently?

Oh man, I thought I was meeting at the end of October... I will be with my wife in Chicago from Nov 8-15 for our 10th anniversary. I can pick up from @Booch the weekend of Nov 5th, maybe meet earlier in the week somewhere? @ErikinSC and @77wagon how are your schedules looking at that time? If Booch is cool meeting in Charleston on the 5th, I can run it down to Savannah on the 6th. Maybe in to North Florida depending on who can meet and where. @mel lowe how far north can you go on the 6th? Alternatively, I can head down on the 19th...

I'm flexible on dates. I can grab the baton in Jacksonville and heads towards savannah
Actually if you can meet me somewhere between Jax and Savannah on the 6th, and then take the baton to St Augustine on the following weekend, we can maintain the schedule?

Pictures out at Fernandina?

Can do

I'm willing to meet up in Key West then head north to Ft Myers or meet in Fort Myers and head down to KW...At any rate, I will be there.. at the Broken Birfield Bar.

I'll be sitting on a barstool...sloshing the salty sea air off the tonsils with a cool one or two or three or floor..I mean four. It's there you know... out by the trawler docks.

I am in Columbia, SC for a conference on Nov 2 / 3 and then I fly out to Vegas on the 6th for another conference. I should be back on Nov the 10th. I am open the following weekend - unless my :princess: changes her mind.

Think that works for me-will need to check w/Cap'nconch, but should be doable--we just need a trailer ride down to KW to get started(ha!)--Or maybe just a generous donation of prob a million gals of fuel if we drive both ways---

I should be good the first part of November...Need to figure how it gets from FL to Atlanta. I'll get it up thru North GA and to @Cleg in Andrews, NC.

@Chris8760 or @Sig191144 could either of you guys get further South to intercept from the Florida leg?
