I am looking to install a longe range fuel tank in my 1969 fj40. I first did a search in the forums and did not find an answer to my question.

The 28 gallon long range fuel tank that man-a-fre sells would be ideal for me, however it does not fit in the 69 as is. It's the one that fits under the passenger seat and the driver seat. I know it has been put in a 69 in the past by others so that brings me to my question. What mods to the floor pan were made to make it fit? What is different in the floor pan between a 69 and a 72 and up? Does the tank filler need to be modified?

I talked with man-a-fre and said that cutting out the box under the driver seat is not enough. All he know was that floor pan mods were need.

why not find a metal shop in your town and have them make one?

I would MUCH rather get a rear tank than loose the factory toolbox and have to booty fab something for the driver's seat. My .02

That is an option I will have to look into. Haven't thought about it.

I plan on building a roll cage so my seating will be built into it. If I didn't have a roll cage then yes it would be a bit of an issue. I am not too concerned with losing the tool box because I have plans for another built into the bed of the fj40. As far as the rear tank, I don't like the idea of have it under the body where it is exposed.

My cruiser isn't exactly stock anymore nor do I plan on going that route. I am building a mechanicly sound offroad vehicle without any frill. I will trailer it where I can am making it road worthy if I do need to drive long distances.

That just about explains EVERYTHING! So in the words of Emily Latella {SNL} "Never mind"

I have NEVER heard of anyone having a problem with the rear tank being 'exposed' However, I do know a guy named John Pardi made good use of the tank's location to fab up a storage box. I wish I had a picture of it.
