Hello you guys,,,,,,I noticed LandCruiserSteves fj25 is back up for sale on Ebay. I would like to possibly buy it but am wondering if the value is diminished since it doesn't have the original engine in it? Also, I read where Steve said it was swapped out for a mid to late 60's F engine. Could you guys tell me if those would have been the SAME engines regarding specs on both? According to some old posts I noticed the engine number is F83143. Could anyone tell me what year that engine was made? SOR does not go back that far. Thanks everyone. I would like to buy that cruiser from the current owner but want to make sure that the engines are at least the same even if the engine is not the original engine. fjfjfj

The engine in Steve's is a F145 (68 to 71). The correct motor would have been a F120. The F135 is real close, not sure what that difference is between the F120 and F135. But the manifolds are different on the F145. Up until around 1966 the serial number for engine was stamped into the VIN plate on the firewall. Since my FJ45 (65) had a 2F in it went I bought it (not matching the number on the VIN plate) I'm not going to restore to original. My 1970 FJ40 also had a 2F but because the enging number is not anywhere on the vehicle I'm going to find a good F145 to put in making closer to stock. Unlike most other classic vehicles the mid sixties and later really means nothing when poeple say all matching numbers. The only numbers are the vehicle ID not to do with the drive train.

I still need to answer your PM but I am interested in your offer.

The motor is NOT a F145 it is earlier ... just from the serial number it has to be a 120

Let me explain a bit more ... toyota put sequential serial numbers on the blocks. Block 83143 puts the engine at year 1958. However these serial number does not say what the engine is ... but it would make since that it would be a F120.

going off the photos, I thought it was a F145 also

the valve cover and rocker arm stud would've been swapped out or more than likely the entire head

the air cleaner and carb suggest later than F135

the oil filler tube is missing the early 2nd smaller dump/overflow tube

the distributor, while not entirely uncommon, also suggest post F135 per the later style vacumn advance

all in all, very nice truck................., good luck with the sale:beer:

p.s. you can't go wrong with a convertible in Fla.

If the block really is F83143 it is most likely original and consistent with what we see in the Registry. How the later stuff ended up on the top end is one of those mysteries that can be returned back to original. Good on you for checking the numbers. I had also assumed based on the top end it was a later model engine. :o

Moved to the regular section since this wasn't a classified.

FJFJFJ regarding the FJ25

Hello you guys,,,,,,,,,,,,I have been researching this cruiser a little bit since I want to buy it. The current owner sent me the numbers off of the engine as I requested. They were F248996. Apparently there is not plate on the firewall. I then went to SOR and found that those engine numbers seemed to match an engine produced sometime after August of 1968. I am not as knowledgable as any of you guys but thought that I would share what I found out. The number F83143 is a number I have heard about from the history lessons on this cruiser but those numbers were not presented to me by the current owner, only the F248996. I thought maybe of buying it and doing what Steve wanted to do all along. Take it back to stock green and in my case I was perhaps planning to put on an original style soft top. If anyone can shed more light on this motor then please let me know. I am still interested in it. Beautiful cruiser. Thanks, fjfjfj

That would make it a 68 or early 69 F145 not a F120 or F135. That also looks to be the correct air cleaner and carburator for a 68 thru 3/69. Earlier carburators had a much larger site glass. There was even another round site glass the was a little bigger then the 68. The paper element air cleaner on the FJ25 was also different. The top cover was larger and the air drew in thru that instead of the necked opening on the side. Australia seem to get this standard while allmost all imported to the US got a oil bath.

This is a hard top model. The soft top models were a different body until 64. The B pillar would have been higher on the hard top and the door windows used a slider instead of a crank. Parts for these are about as hard to find as the bows and soft top doors for the early soft tops.

Thanks everyone for your assist. I have decided to pass on this one and will continue looking for an original FJ25. Appreciate you pro's. Us rookies are happy to have a place in the MUD so that questions can get answers. FJFJFJ
