After completing the axle conversions on my 07 FJ I ran into of course some problems which I was able to work thru myself or with the help from you guys.
So far everything has worked out but I lost all of my steering wheel controls, cruise, radio, horn, etc, possibly due to the reconfigure of the new steering box and u-joints and the spinning of the wheel during fabrication.
Just checking to see if anyone can give some idea before I start tearing things apart. The FJ drives great and it doesn't affect much but I'd like to make it right.
Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

Thanks Tim

The spiral cable probably needs replacing. That or you forgot to plug the harness back in behind the air bag in the steering wheel. I don't know if you even had that out, but it's pretty easy to check before digging on the spiral cable.

I never messed with the steering wheel, but rotating it during the build may have disconnected this cable you refer to?
Where's this connection? how do I get to it?
Thanks for your input -
Tim

The connector couldn't come loose by just turning the wheel since it's actually got to be unclipped. Chances are it's the spiral cable and I have no clue how to remove it since I didn't get that deep in to the steering wheel. I did read that it's a common problem when working on the steering and it'll break almost every time the steering wheel can free-spin.

*%#$#@* - sounds like money going out again. Hopefully someone can give me a clue on how to repair it.
Thanks Tim

It does sound like the spiral cable. You need to remove the cover from the front of the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel to access the spiral cable. They can be repaired with a little effort. Try searching on pirate or ttora... there is a thread that shows how to fix the spiral cable.

Thanks, I already found the link on Pirate and it looks like a piece of cake to repair depending on where it broke.
If I ever do another conversion for myself or someone else I'll know the do's and don'ts. So thanks for your help. I'll be running it this year in on the Rubithon, last year I sold my built FJ40 to build the FJ Cruiser which was not ready for the trail so I ran the buggy in. It's going to take some getting use to on the trail as I've always run open rigs but I'm looking forward to enjoying the A/C, sound system, and staying dry if it rains like it did that one year.

Tim

Yes, Santa Rosa. I think I'm the only straight axle FJ in the area, there was a yellow one that use to be in the area but he sold it?

I pulled out the spiral cable from behind the steering wheel last night and YEP it was twisted and broke. So I started to repair it by stripping the wire ends, their very fragile and after a little bit got'm clean enough to solder tonight. Just for kicks I called Toyota on the cost to replace it if I didn't have much luck soldering and they quoited me $320- guess what? I'm soldering.
So again thanks for your help, I'll keep a eye out for you on the trail, I'm in the silver with a black top cruiser with the trail ready beadlocks.
Tim

Cool! Hope the soldering works out. This is me, usually running tube doors on the Rubicon unless the mosquitos are really bad.

Hey!!
Where did you get a photo of my rig? Mine's very similar looking, I'll post up a photo. Is that a swing out rack on the back? I'm starting to get some ideas on building one.

Tim

Yes it's a swingout. Here are a couple of pictures from when it was first built.

Wow, that's some tube work. Who built it? And does it flex around much? looks kinda spindly

Don @ FC Fab built it (look up fc187 in the land cruiser section on Pirate and you'll see his other artwork). Not much deflection or flex.
