It seems some of you either work for Toyota or Toyota dealerships and have some inside info. So, I was curious as to how Toyota dealers get their allotment. I had the first deposit at my local dealer and when I went in to inquire a couple times they acted like they knew nothing and had a don't call us we'll call you attitude. So when I went in a couple weeks ago to ask about getting my truck a salesman said "did you place an order?" I said I wasn't asked to, and this guy behind an elevated desk on the sales floor, that I was sent to, said, "none of the trucks we are getting fit the description of what you want." So my question is, did they drop the ball as far as contacting me as to what I want or do they just get what Toyota sends and let me know when my black 6-speed comes in? Thank you for your help.

I don't work for Toyota but my assumption is that the dealers get what Toyota sends and they will call you when they get one matching your "must have" requirements. Typically, they will call you when they get something close if it isn't already allocated to someone else.

Example: I had my name on the list for an automatic, pearl-white, twin-turbo 300ZX when they were brand new (spring of '88 IIRC). None of the dealers knew what they were getting or when... kinda like the FJC's. None of the sales reps knew anything about the vehicles, though I was able to get some good information from the GM of the dealership. He had been to one of the rollout events and had driven one on the track.

Anyway.... they called me when they got notice they were getting a "Glacier White" vehicle in their initial allocation. It was not a turbo but it was an automatic and I wanted it so the deal was struck. The turbos were months away and I didn't want to wait. So I waited about a week and they called me when the truck was on the way to the dealership. I was there as it was unloaded from the truck and the GM and I took it for a short test drive before it was prepped. They started prepping the vehicle and I went in, cut the check, and did all the paperwork.

It was the first 300ZX in Houston and I was a happy camper. Wish I still had that car.

From what I have gathered thay get them according to the volume the dealership does [cars thay sell] Your best bet will be to find the higest volume seller in your area and give them a call

Toyota sends what they are going to send. However it is the job of the dealer's to input their preferences into a system called dealer daily. The distributor (middle man) takes this information and attempts to align the dealer's preference with the incoming trucks. If you wanted a stripped down model and all Toyota sent were fully loaded rigs then there is/was little the dealer could do.

The initial deadline for the first allocation run (Toyota owned distributors only, diff deadlines for Gulf States and SET) was 1/24/2006. Anything put into the system by that date was used for the first allociation. If your dealer didn't ask for specifics before the 24th then it does sound like they dropped the ball.

Just talked to a couple local dealers thay are expecting delv on the 6th thay both stated that outher than basic info such as motors, drivetrains thay have no idea what thay are getting outher than 4x4 and 2x4 one is geting 8 the outher is geting 9 thay are to go into some kind of training early next week...Delv same week.........

Yes. My first 4 Z's were all manual and I wanted that one to be an automatic. I'm not sure if they ever built twin-turbo automatics but nobody could tell me what would be available or when.

I've got 3 vehicles now and all are automatics. I think this is the first time since I started driving about 45 years ago that I haven't had at least 1 stick shift. :D

Damn, I'm old. :frown:

Thank you for the replies and suggestions. Special thanks to Dawg, who may have asked my question of the dealers he talked to, in an effort to get me an answer. The guy behind the desk on the sales floor (who has told me twice he has the second deposit) said he wasn't getting what he wanted either in the first shipment. I thought he might just be saying that to make me feel better. That same guy also said that manual trans. would only be about 5% of production. That more than anything might have something to do with my wait. Thanks again.

This guy knows what's up. My friend who is in sales at a local dealer told me he sat down with the Manager and they entered into the "dealer system" how they wanted their alloted FJ Cruisers equipped when they arrive. They already have a complete list of the first batch of FJ Cruisers they will receive and how they will be optioned. They just match up trucks with buyers on the waiting list in order. If they do not have your exact truck you have a choice of whatever is not taken coming in.

It really is interesting to see how different dealers are handleing the FJ Cruiser release in radically different ways.

I dont know if it works different in Canada or not but i went into the dealer a month ago and we went through all the options i wanted and posted my pre order and the dealer told me they will order it and it will come straight from factory with all the options i requested. I then put my deposit down.

It is currently on a boat and it is suppose to arrive in vancouver next week and i will get it in edmonton a week or two after.

Rob.

my dealer in NJ STILL looks at me with a "your crazy" look when i mention the new FJ. they no nothing about them, never even heard of them, they said.

Sounds like it's time for a new dealer....

according to the toyota canada dealer sheet I was given they estimate 39% of production will be manuals of which 9% will be base manuals, 16% B package and 14% C package.. automatics will be 16% base, 24% B and 21% c package. maybe that's canada specific.

When you call the dealer most likely you get a salesman and they know nothing, cause they are told nothing. Second 99% will not know what they have till is it dropped off at the dealer. But the dealer all ready knows what is hitting the floor since they have to pay the "flooring" thats the % the dealer pays Toyota until sold. The one who knows whats inbound is the one who orders the units and this person most likely shares another job since they have vast knowledge for tier product. And that is the Fleet manager. call your local store and ask who thier Fleet manager is, write his nane down then ask to speak to him. But have all your ducks in order. he is not a sales person and does not have the time to spend jacking his jaw to you. But he is the guy that will get you EXACTLY what you want and take your money in deposit form and call you when they hit the ground.....So, waist a sales person time over the phone and never give them your last name or number. remember they ask everyone that, just ask to stay on hold you haqve the time or ask them if they are not the right guy to talk to and should thier be some body else who has product training and say it with respect and you will get answers!

Mckenna2002-
I built a FJ on the site, called my Milwaukee dealer........2 weeks later he calls me and tells me I can put a $500.00 deposit to secure the vehicle I built. He also says(since I added everything I could except gps) It might take until June to get it. I hope this helps.
