I am looking for another 4x4 but can't decide what to buy. Whatever I buy will be my daily driver, have a small lift (2"-3") and will be off road on the weekends. I have owned a '96 Land Rover Discovery (3" lift, rock sliders, sway bar disconects, stock diff lock) and a'94 FJ80 (no lift, stock lockers). I also recently test drove an FJ cruiser w/ a 2.5" skyjacker lift. I'm not sure that I'm completely sold on the capabilities of the FJ Cruiser w/ IFS front suspension. I am looking for a low-mileage FZJ80 w/ stock lockers, a 2004 LR Discovery (only late model w/ the diff lock), or an FJ Cruiser w/ A-Trac and rear locker. Any suggestions???

Being a FJ Cruiser onwer for over a year, ATRAC, Rear locker and the right tires, I have not found anywhere that it could not go. At that point, you would have to go with what you need inside. The vehicle you compare have very different interiour capacity and capability. The FJ having more bacic foundtions but very nice for off road. I personally have never wanted for more but have just enhanced what we have with some add ons.

FJ for comfort and daily commute, Moderate wheeling and some expedition wheeling.

80 for short commute and expedition wheeling, short commute due to the fuel consumption.

No experiance on the LR

I had a '94 Disco... worst car I ever owned. I wheeled it a bit... then discovered that "off-road" for Land Rover means "on a lift" - getting repaired. I bought the Disco new, had it 3 years and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I do think Land Rovers are very cool cars/trucks. I'd probably have one now... if Toyota would build them. The quality is just too weak... and the cost of parts is insane.

I agree with Manhattan. My 2000 Disco was a nightmare. At 66,000 miles it was on it's second set of head gaskets, had a leaking main seal, and a still had coolant in the oil. Not to mention all of the smaller, yet still expensive items. I originally loved the truck, but the repairs on those things can become insane. Never again.

DO NOT BUY A LAND ROVER IF YOU PLAN ON TAKING IT OFF OF PAVEMENT
Like Manhatten said, off road for an LR is on a lift getting fixed, plus for what you get.......way over priced compared to the FJ

As for the FJC vs. the FJ80...............personal preference, do you want a new car or do you want an old car.........Do you want bare bones systems or do you want electronicly sophistocated systems.....it's all up to you. However, being an FJC owner i do hold a slight bias............BUY THE FJ, you'll love it.

here we go... I'll at least agree with the fact to NOT buy a Land Rover.

I didn't think ANY Rover's had factory diff locks???

In the 80 section there was this same thread...so save some time and read that one...lots of arguments and peoples panties getting in wads...

I agree it's what your usage is going to be to a point.

I have had 2 different disco's, a 2000 and a 2003 hse, both were ok riding around town but you if you go off road they suck. I got stuck in the snow in october on the bighorns hunting in about 6 inches of snow oin a slight incline and had to chain up to get out. I went home and traded it for an 97 FZJ80 with lockers. the FZJ80 is the ultimate off road. Due to some fighting with my wife, I am selling my 97. see it in the classifieds.
