took out my buggy wheeling yesterday with my club and broke the rear pinion teeth on my mini truck rear axle. i got chromolly axle shafts in it and its set up for 4 link already.
my question is:
Should i just replace the broken gears and wheel or-
Should i upgrade to larger fj80 ff rear axle and build the 4 link brakets set for it all over again.

would upgrade to fj60 rear witch i can get for cheap but i think the ff axles would hold up better to the abuse of the red label BFG's

what u guys think?

who needs teeth... :hillbilly: Seen you climbing without em

4cyl or v6 dif in there? I broke my stock old v6 ring and pinion but replaced with Yukon. No problems so far. If I break again I'm goin to the ford 9". Can get the dif's cheap on Craig's and there a ton of aftermarket parts.

4cyl diff. With trail gear gears. Would like to keep it all toyota. Thats why i was thinking fj80 9.5 rear end would be good. Does the ford 9" has 6 wheel lugs?

I was running the same gears for 3 seasons. Not bad for $150 trail gear part.

Ford 9 has 5 I believe.
I'm sure there's ways of making it 6 lug though.

U think 9" is stronger in stock firm than fj80 ff ?

I believe the 9 inch diff is stronger. There's pluses and minuses to both. I like a ff rear over a semi, a lot easier to get off the trail to repair a broken shaft. But blowing up diffs gets pretty expensive. Upgrading shafts will give you your 6 lug on the 9. Pretty sure superior has a kit and it's not too expensive iirc.

If you upgrade the diff and the shafts where's your breaking point now?

I'd stay with the mini truck. Seems to take a fair abuse and its your weak link and its relatively cheap. Once you upgrade what will break next.

Probably the t case housing will brake next if i upgrade to bigger rear axle.
Would fj40 3rd fit in fj80 axle housing?

Why use the 40 diff? Most are older and the lower gears are coarse spline. I guess you could do it as people put the lockers from the 80 series into the 40's but again why. The 80 series have 4:10 gears already.

Just thinking if i get 80 axle would have 40 3rd as spare because is cheaper than 80 3rds.

I have 80 thirds and multiple sets of take out stock R&Ps

Personally the 80 thirds stand up better than the 40 thirds that I've taken apart. Toyota redesigned them with the introduction of the 70 series I think. Yes they are more costly but there is good reason for it.

U have complete 80 axle?

Ok . Thanks. I need the rear. How much is average cost of fj80 rear axle with disc brakes and no elocker?

Dude save the trouble and run the minis, buy some yukons and go. I bent the hell outa my upper 4 link mounts shelling with y'all this last gathering and no problems with a rear diff. Yet. I have broken the imput on the dual case 1 time several rung off drive shaft flanges and still going on a 8 year old set of yukons. My 2 cent worth, but I bet y'all gettin some snow about now .

The cost of the rear axle will depend on the quality you are looking for. The ones in the junk yards by now are crap and you can expect to pay quite a but more to get them ready for service.

Look into CruiserParts. I do buy a lot if my stuff there and always drive up to inspect and pay for it.

been running set of 39' bfg stickies for 2 years now and that's the first part that broke on the buggy in that time(exept spider gears exploding last year) so might just install new gears in it and wheel,
will have to research some more options on the cheap.

got about 1.5 inches here in CT

Yukon gears for cheap fix. 9" for upgrade. Fj80 FF is cool but get more options with a custom 9"(any width, any lug, stronger dif, 35 spline shafts)
and prob not much more than building a new 80 buggy axle.
