my water pump is toast, i'm replacing all belts but hoses seem good other than the clamps are corroded and I had to cut them for removal. The hoses have large indents in them from the ome wire clamps (possibly being overtightened by previous owner) and I am concerned if I go with standard hose clamps from Napa they won't seal properly. Any ideas on if I should bite the bullet and order new wire clamps from the dealer, not give a bum and put standard clamps on anyway, or replace all the hoses and then use standard clamps (being new they should seal with a different clamp). Also does the entire power steering unit need to come off in addition to everything else I've removed or can I just remove the studs and the waterpump unit should just drop out thus saving a step. (I've got many other issues besides the water pump which need attention also!)

The water pump will come off without removing p/s. I reused my oem clamps but replaced most of the hoses. The short hose behind the p/s was a bear for me.

After several different approaches here's what worked for me -

Install short inlet hose on water pump
Insert hard pipe into the short inlet hose and align bolt that holds pipe to chasis.
Here's the pain, remove inlet hose and pipe intact.
Put both clamps(one for the pipe and the other for w/p inlet) on but only tighten the bottom one. Place close attention to how the clamps situated. i.e. which way tightener is facing.
Fish the un-tightened clamp up onto w/p and then tighten.

Other lessons learned -
My fan clutch took a $hit a week after the pump was replaced. :frown:
A long thin magnetic tool helps a bunch for getting the four nuts on fan started.

Good luck -:)

Welcome.

Me:

I would replace every hose and clamp that attaches to the water pump...I only like doing things once...you are already in there....rework wastes not only money, but T I M E.

Good luck!

sounds like your both right.. i appreciate the time taken to respond, however i'm going to cut the large pipe off the inlet on the pump because perhaps somebody pevious to me installed a longer stud than necessary to remove the pump w/out removing the power steering unit... just don't know! at least i bought a new pump so i won't need the old one for a core anyway, i'm curious if what i have is stock, what if some swinger put studs in place of bolts???? i already found one of the front leaf springs transversed, think this guy was smokin or what? the beauty of it all is were just having fun here right? think i'll wait for my ome clamps and then make a decision. you guys are great, thanx again!!!!

While you are in there for the water pump, do yourself a favor and do the following:

T-stat,
hoses,
fan clutch,
belts, and
idler pulley
