Howdy,
I have an awesome fiance' that got me a tuffy security console for Christmas (best girl ever!). I was doing to searching on the forum and never could find what I was looking for as far as install comments and photos. Therefore I decided to start my own thread with photos and a short explanation of the project. People had nothing good to say about the brackets from CCOT or other companies. I saw many methods of people using wooden blocks or fabbed metal pieces (nothing really appealed to me).

First things first, remove the original console.

After some measuring, I marked the bottom of the console.... I should have measured twice and cut once..... I ended up with a second set of hole that weren't needed, but it happens...
I measured 2-1/2" from the drivers side of the console, then 11" from the front of the cup holers, then 19-7/8" from the front of the console for the second set of holes. I drilled 3/8" holes so the measurements didn't have to be perfect.

Next, I took my drill and drilled the original mounting holes in the floor for the original console out to 13/64" and tapped them with a 1/4" x 20 tap to take a standard 1/4" bolt.

I went to the local hardware store and got fully threaded 1/4" bolts - the front holes used the 3" bolts and the rear holes used the 2-1/2" bolts. I put a flat washer, ran the bolt through the console, used another flat washer and a nut to sandwich the console. installed a third nut on the bolts to act as "jam nut".
This prevented me from bending the bottom of the console when trying to tighten it to the floor and make it stable. After getting the bolts threaded into the floor, I ran the first nut up to the bottom of the console and made sure it was tight. Lastly, i ran the "jam nut" down the the floor mounting points.

The console is rock solid. The entire truck can be shaken by grabbing the console.

This was my approach to mounting the console, hope it gives some people new ideas when they go to mount theirs.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Cheers,
KK

Looks great! Thanks for the write up.

Looks really nice. Good write up too. For sure on my list of upgrades!

Nice, mounted mine almost the exact same way. Has a false bottom in it providing a few inches of space to hold all kinds of wiring for stuff like this

.

Hey Bear, where did you get that cute little gauge with the power port/voltage indicator?

@cruiserpilot Right here a year or two back. You can take them apart and mount the sockets in the faceplate however you want. Note the usb has low power for phones and high output for tablets, etc. I use them all the time, use the tablet with backcountry navigator on my droid based stuff. In my example above the top dual plate has the voltmeter and a cig style socket. the bottom plate has side by side USB sockets. There are pics of my install on this link

Thanks, way too many layers to this website! I had no idea.
I can only comment that having those mounted down low in my truck would not work, too much cargo.
Going to have to get creative.

mount them on the front or side of the tuffy. You can also get USB cords that have 90 degree plug on them so they are more of a flush mount when inserted.

Looks good. I just did the smittybuilt for my fj62. Had to cut out a piece for the heater control on the back, but not a difficult project.

What are your black straps on the side of your console for? Mine came with those and I don't know what to use them for. Thx.

Black straps are for the seatbelt buckle.... At least that is what I ised it for to keep from having to fish it out from between the seat and console.

Great write-up. I love the carpet colour in the first photo. Green where the sun hits it and chocolate brown under the old console. Mine looks the same. I wish there was a dye I could use to make it brow again.

Also, what gauge metal is the tuffy made out of. I would like to build one. How hard can it be...

The long bolt idea is clever. I welded up some brackets to mount to the OEM mount points and keep the Tuffy a bit off the floor so I could hide an amplifier underneath.

I put mu DC/AC converter on the back of the Tuffy, so the plugs are all at the top, easy to reach from the front and accessible even when loaded for camping. Oh sorry -- "Overlanding"... :flipoff2::hillbilly:
