I'm beginning the rebuilding of a 1970 FJ 40, but I don't know how much modification I want to do. It's a 3 speed with factory PTO winch. The body is at the body shop have the few issues with it taken care of and a fresh coat of paint being applied. That is where I was going to stop...

I have since decided to take it all the way down to the frame and freshen everything up.

Now for my dilemma, do I ditch the engine, transmission and PTO for a V8, automatic or 5 speed and electric winch? The historian in me says no, but I think the modifications will add drivability and value.

Any suggestion or criticisms welcome.

First off, Welcome :flipoff2: [official mud welcome] Got pics?

Definitely ditch the PTO winch!! ;) Let me know what you'll take for it. :D

But seriously, there are pros and cons to PTO vs. electric. Everyone feels differently.

You'll see me often repeat my opinion: I prefer to keep everything that I can Toyota. MHO

These rigs are tough and capable right out of the box. Arguably though, your stock 3 speed, 1F, and gearing can leave a little to be desired, particularly on road.

Many chose to go with V8's and domestic transmissions. There's nothing wrong with doing that. The power, initial cost, and parts availability can be appealing. Do a lot of homework if you decide to go that route, as the final price of the install can easily surpass a Toyota swap. Also, often, having a domestic drivetrain reduces the resale value of your rig.[Debatable] If you plan to keep it, that doesn't matter of course.

Drive what you have, and see how you like it. Everyone has different needs.

If it were mine, I would probably swap in a 2F and a 4 speed tranny from a later FJ40, and keep your transfer case. You should be able to find both in good condition, reasonably priced [or better ;)] with out to much trouble. They also will swap in easily.

This would give you what many consider a very desirable/capable set-up. It would have very decent offroad gearing/power, and very decent on road manors and power. It should handle 33's+ very comfortably..........and you will keep the legendary Toyota reliability and durability, which appeals to me. Just my .02 cents

Feel free to ask more specific questions. Use the search function as well, these subjects have been discussed many times. There is a wealth of information on this site. :)
