i'm in need of new tires. but i don't want to ruin new tires because the driver side front tire has a bend to it that eats tires. a year ago a guy at alpine tire said he could have the wheel shimmed to correct it. had the guy check again earlier this week. diagnosis is that he can't shim it after all. the wheel is way bent to be corrected by a shim. he said probably the housing is jacked up. so now i find a guy in grand junction who can do the work, but it will probably cost anywhere from $500 to $1000... if that is all that's wrong with it.

question: shouldn't i just buy a used front axle from somebody parting out and install it myself? how difficult is it to install a front axle?

thanks!

200 to 400 for the axle, 150 for a knuckle kit. and a Saturday to do the install. is the way I would go. plus you get to know your cruiser.

would a knuckle kit fix a bent housing?

I bet you could find a good housing for $50..

it wont fix a bent housing/tube, but it will fix a bad trunion bearing

sounds like really good advice guys! i just fear that i'll probably have to take her to junction then to have it done. the guy at alpine tire said it might be a bent housing... he wasn't for sure. and i wouldn't know one way or another if it was a bad trunion or a bent housing. i don't know the difference betwixt either. i'm f***ed.

i appreciate the offer lcwizard! if i knew that what my outfit needed for sure, then i'd say yeah! think i'm gonna take proffitts advice and have them check it out. thanks though!!

Yep, that's the way to go. You would just need the housing.

You don't have to know since you're replacing both. You'll find out once you get it all apart, though.

add in a case of beer to bribe some cruiserheads to come help and you're all set.
