First oil change. Pumped out the oil from the dipstick tube, got 7.5 L, then got another 0.5 L from the filter. Slightly over capacity (likely the dealer had over-filled), but not too bad. Not a single drop came out from the pan drain, which I've never seen before (oil temp was hot, filler cap off, dipstick out). Since it seems like the pump + filter drain method will get all the oil, I declined to install the Fumoto, and plan to just leave the plug in place. Thanks to the wealth of knowledge here, I expected some of the shield bolts to be mixed up and over-tightened (check) and the filter cap to be on too tightly (check), and I was ready to go with the right filter wrench and drain tool. This was ridiculously smooth.

Good to know about the aspiration method being so effective on this sump/pan/whatever combo they put in place. Friendly heads up on your Wix filter - they're not what they once were. Once Mann-Hummel took over, it's been a race to the bottom of quality compared to what their brand was built upon years ago. Steer clear of them is my word of unsolicited caution.

I used to be a BIG wix guy....no more.

So with the pan drain plug removed nothing would come out? Or you didn't bother because the extractor worked so well?

If it's the former, I'd 100% have to get to the bottom of that.

Bummer to hear this. I use Wix on the Hondas (OEM on the Toyotas). What aftermarket filter do you recommend?

That's the rub....

I wish there was a solid answer to this...unfortunately most manufacturers now aren't what they were prior to 2019/2020. Lots of changes in ownership/direction/etc happening. Over at BITOG, they are VERY involved in drilling down to which filters are good right now by testing and cutting virgin cans open. I had a bad experience with the flagship Amsoil filters which I had previously recommended despite their being more expensive. This change happened when I saw a run of glue on the clean side of the cartridge (Toyota style) filter. We will see if Amsoil technical customer service line is correct or not in it being ok to use.

The canister style (think Honda) Amsoil ea filters use better media (synthetic vs OEM cellulose) that catch more of the smaller particulate contaminants in the oil vs OEM while maintaining good flow. As of right now, I am warily working through old stock of Amsoil (heavily personally inspected prior to installation) canister style filters for my Hondas. After my current stock goes, I'm going to try and find a Donaldson equivalent which will hopefully have their SynTeq media and ADBV. This part is the big lift. Finding a filter manufacturer that currently makes good stuff when you can no longer just say "____ always makes a good filter." Fleetguard is another good name that doesn't have the known issues of some of the others (specifically M+H, etc) of closed louvres, partially open bypass valves, etc.

If you're in a pinch, I've heard Premium guard and Microguard select are solid choices too, but cannot speak first hand about them other than having a couple Napa Gold filters I bought right as Napa Gold transitioned from Wix/M+H to PG.

HTH.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll have to do some homework.

Thanks for the heads up and the detailed summary. I've done a few rabbit hole dives on filters in the past, but haven't updated in a while. This filter will probably come out in a few months and 6k or so, at which point I can look at other options. Whatever was in there before looked a bit twisted; could check the brand if anyone is curious, but I don't think I'd be able to discern much by looking at it.

Removed the plug, not a drop. 8L out is quite a bit, so I'm pretty sure it was over-filled too. Note that I left the pump on for a while, let the car sit, then ran it again, and also left the filter cap off for maybe an hour or so.

No prob at all. Just spreading the good word as good products and businesses should be elevated. These companies that acquire, devalue, and destroy companies like locusts should be put on full display for everyone to know what happens when they touch a brand with storied history (Wix, etc). It's quite a deep dive if you're...ahem..."somewhat" type A like me.

On a related note, has anyone seen this, from the 2015 2010 Service Manual? Green and blue are pretty close colors, but it would appear mine is blue, which means 7 L, not 7.5 L. There's no mention of this in the Owner's Manual.

Update: I was looking at a "2015" Service Manual that is actually a 2010, so let's call this an academic question until I can check the correct document.

Per the Amsoil lookup tool, you should be getting 7.9 US qts (with filter change) in your rig. I'll defer to you on conversion to metric. 👍

Yeah, seems okay; I was looking at 2010. Will find a 2015 Owner's Manual and update here in case it has the same note. But everything's in agreement at the moment: 7.5L (7.9 US qt).
