I bought a low miles 2003 LX470 a few months ago and it is bone stock (it’ll be in the shop next week getting its first (I suspect) timing belt and WP change at 71k miles). I’ve kicked around the idea of doing some off-road camping with my family with young kids, and think it would be a great activity for us. I’d like to try out an easy trail (and won’t be camping this time). I grew up on ATVs but just assume I have zero off-road skills. And again, my LX is currently stock with standard grocery-getter tires. Are there any easy trails near-ish to Charlotte that we could try? I want to get my toes wet and see if it is something we’d like. Appreciate any suggestions!

Head out to Uwharrie. Do falls damn and wolf's den for easy ones.

Very capable truck in stock form. My first recommendation for mods is the nut behind the wheel. Learn all you can in a controlled environment and that way you will be able to better decide how to invest on the truck a bit better. Down in Uwharrie the best driving school is OEX (link below). I know a guy there....

Follow Al’s advice and start with the easy ones, but eventually you’ll be shocked by what it will do stock. The only “upgrades” I have on my ‘03 LX are 33” tires and the running boards removed.
Get some training and that thing will amaze you.
