Ok, I am driving around for the first time with new gears and locker. I take the 60 all over the place in town today, curvy roads, gravel roads, the works. No pops or bangs anywhere along the way. I am feeling good about my skills now...LOL

Then we come home and pull into my driveway which is down hill and gravel and park. Go insidem, come right back and jump in to back up. The backtires spun a little in the gravel when I reversed on the gravel, pulled up on the pavement and then put it in first and rolled forward. There was a pop-pop-pop and the Cruiser felt as if I had the brakes on. I thought my wife was gonna puke, she thought I blew the rear end.

I backed it down, still had problems moving and parked it. I then decided to pull into our garage. It is not done yet so the pad is 6in tall with nothing built up to it. The Cruiser did not make any sound, just pulled itself back tires first over the 6in high concrete ledge. When the front tires hit the dropoff, the back tires lost traction and squeeled both rears on the concrete. Still not popping or banging. It acts as if nothing ever happened.

Now I am afraid to drive it tomorrow, was gonna take it in to have some adjust the rear brakes and get it to bleed the system better.

Any ideas what I experienced? Should I take off the rear cover and have a look? I have moved it since then back and forth with NO odd sounds....

TIA

Meh. its more than likly normal...it was prob. the locker unloading. i know during tight turns it almost feels like im tapping the brakes. When i know im going from low traction to high i put it in nuetral and push the clutch in...same for tight turns...it seem to like it better that way...note i have an aussie not a lockright but there pretty much the same thing.....

I hope so! I didnt let it roll but maybe a foot forward when the noise started. It sure seems fine to me now, but when you have only running for a day... EEK! Kind of scared the crap out of me...

You will get use to the weird sounds they make..."i" would drive it around more to get use to it.
i know there is about 3 diffrent sounds my locker makes alone with the 3 different feelings it gives for each one......its sweet on the trail though, and its kinda fun accelerating in a straight line cause you can feel it when you shift since the one shaft is shorter than the other it tends to kinda side step.....i like driving with it...

Dont know, pulled it out of the garage last night and no noise at all... pulled it around the drive and up in front of the house. Everything was fine. Then this morning jumped in, started to back up and it started popping, not as loud, and still felt like I had my foot on the brake. Pulled forward gently and it was still doing it. I guess I will first remove the drums and see if the problem is the brakes for some reason and then remove the rear cover and see what I am looking at. I am positive I did the installation right and it drove wonderfully all over town before it happened....

I'm curious to see what this turns out to be. I'm looking at a No-Slip since I don't think I can really justify the work and money of an ARB (at this point) and I know its the same principle as far as operation goes (the No-Slip to the Lockrite), but I guess the No-Slip is supposed to be much easier on the popping action. Do you still plan to tear into the rear to look at it just to make sure when you take care of the brakes?

Well I dont think I had any installation problems, I am pretty confident in that. I reviewed my installation to some tech articles online and I did everything right... And I am confident my gears were intalled right, I trust the guy that set them up for me.

I may be just hyper sensitive to it because I spend so much time on doing all this that I dont want to really jack something up. So I may test drive it again (I really did not have time to this moring) and then if it sound bad I will just stop it where it is and check it out. I will start with the brakes first since it always starts when I back up.. so maybe self adjuster died or something... I will post what I find.

Maybe myster solved?

I am at home for lunch. Pulled it into my garage and the noise changed from the popping to a grinding sound. Lifted it and got the rear end on blocks, tires off... had to BEAT the left rear drum off and a TON of dust came off. This after only say 30mi after I put it all together. This same drum I had to adjust as far down as I could and then beat the crap out of the first time around.... Got the other side pulled apart, no problems. Then I got it all in neutral and spun one side and the other spins the same way. No popping or grinding; although it does make a slight clicking noise, I assume normal Locker operation... Hopefully it is just the rear brakes. I was going to take it somewhere to have the rears adjusted and the system bled, looks like I will have to do it on my own. YUCK! I hate brakes.

I have my fingers crossed, rather have this then be something wrong internally....

I have a lockright in my 60 and it pops all the time especially in turns, but every once in a while it will have a big pop when i just get moving sometimes, but but it works great off-raod, you will enjoy it. You just have to get use to the poppings.

Nick

Stinky, wait until you drive it in the wet doing slow speed tight corners, that should help you make frite-s***e in your Kelvins! Something to be said for the ARB lockers, shame about the price though!

Well it is definetly the brakes. The left rear shoes are pressing against the drum and the adjuster is completely bent. I think that when I was backing up the brakes and locker duked it out with me getting to scared to see who was going to win.
So my locker was working fine, and very quiet until that moment... I think that brake just screwed me over. That is not the first time I have had problems with that left rear brake, guess I will replace everything in there...
