I am about to take my odometer out and clean it up, re lubricate etc. I have read all the write ups about it and feel it shouldn't be a problem. My one question is will I be able to keep it set to the original mileage. Most anyone that I have read about doing this ends up rolling the mileage over to 000000. My 40 has only 59k original miles and I would like to keep that. Easy enough to reassemble it while keeping the counters where they were originally? Not gonna automatically roll it back to 000000 or 999999 or anything right?

Let me know. Thanks guys

I took mine apart in my 1970. It was no problem to set it back to the original reading.

I just did mine a few months ago. Once the wheels are apart, you can set them to anything you want to very easily.

do you have to take the small black screws out of the faceplate and the entire faceplate and needle off? Don't wanna break it, so how do you get it outta there. I got the guts out of it and all the screws out but now need to get the wheel outta there.

Yes on both counts; the needle pulls off with steady, even pressure of fingers behind the central round part.
