My clutch fan had stoped working at slow speed who knows how long ago. It was the prefect time to take everything off the front split the shroud and swap in another clutch fan. I will try changing the fluid in my 500,000k used one someday and see if that brings it back to life. Now I can work on the front with ease.

Nice work! I made a removable top on mine a couple years ago and it's been so nice. No more scratching the crap out of my forearms reaching down to remove the fan to get the whole shroud off. (on my motor, it's tight enough the fan and shroud have to come off together if any work is to be done at the front of the motor).

I used to buy RC car silicone gear oil for my fan hubs at BC shavers/hobby. 10,000CST works great. I think they've closed now tho.
 
I split mine a couple of years ago. Managed to make one cut right at the battery tray level. Lucky
to put the joining bolts just below that, but now I leave one bolt out so I can remove the top without
the battery tray too. Something to think about. I have series 31 batteries, so no extra room either
 
I think I found out why my old clutch fan was failing. I left it over night face down and noticed this extra wet spot on the thermal spring. Also explains why it was caked in oily dirt it must have been leaking out all the silicon fluid.
