Guys/gals - I've been a member here since 2013 so I've been a long time lurker. I finally have a reason to introduce myself and start being a part of the community.
I've been driving a Prius the past couple of years and absolutely hate everything about it except the obvious - going to the gas station. I've been dying to get back into a 4x4 and finally made it happen.
This article convinced me that the 100 was the perfect vehicle for my family of five. My older brother owned a 60 and an 80, so I had some history with Land Cruisers too. I waited very patiently for the right one to come along and I found my stallion - an 02' gray on gray with low mileage (103,000) & maintenance records. The transaction couldn't have gone smoother and the car passed a post-inspection by SD Trux with flying colors.
I've truly fallen in love with this vehicle having only logged about 800 miles. The ride quality on and off road is phenomenal. I owned a 2006 Honda Ridgeline 4x4 for a few years and while it was an incredible functional truck with great ride quality, I never trusted it much off road. The Land Cruiser already has proven to do things the Ridgeline could never do.
I really want to take care of this car so the first thing I did was have the it completely gone through by SD Trux. They did the timing belt/water pump, oil, front/rear diff oil, and a number of other things to make sure the truck was ready for the next 100,000 miles. With that said, I've been inspired by a number of builds here from guys who never touched a wrench to doing full on suspension mods. I want to follow in their steps and learn the skills it takes to do my own maintenance and mild repairs. Also, I really like the idea of being able to take care of all three of my vehicles as well as pass these skills onto my three kids.
I'd love some advice about how to get started or just some encouragement that I'm not an idiot for diving into this
