So I finally got one of my dream trucks (LN106 Compliments of GreenPump). It has a turbo kit. Has some bed damage, but is absolutely immaculate other than that. I have a new 79 series bed that I am going to hack in half and remove 3 inches from so that I can replace with it (unless someone happens to have a donor vehicle that I could get the bed panels from).............

I asked the guys at Berrima and they suggested a 3" exhaust. That seems a little big. How do these engine react with backpressure when putting in a large exhaust?

If anyone ever is looking at buying a truck from him, I would highly suggest it. quality of work is top notch. As is his attention to detail.

I am glad it went to a good home. Sad to see it go.

My toyota "problem" has reached uncurable levels now. Currently there are two HDJ81s and an HDJ80 at the house in various stages of modification.

That LN106 started it all!

I've got an LN167R, 5L, turbo - 3" exhaust installed (up from stock 2" system) as part of the turbo upgrade.

From what I've picked up around the place, there's a lot of commentary that opening up the exhaust won't do a great deal for an NA engine like a 3L or 5L.

However, if the engine is fitted with a turbo, you're pumping more air in, so it stands to reason there's more exhaust going out. For a given mass of gas, a hot quantity takes up more volume than cold, so it also stands to reason that if you've got more hot exhaust going out, the stock pipe diameter will struggle to get rid of it. The anecdotal comment around a bigger exhaust not being much chop for an NA engine, stacks up at a base principles level - well it does for me, anyway.

Given that you've tapped the Berrima crew for intel, check youtube for their advice on larger exhaust. You should find that it is in line with comments above. A turbo+larger exhaust helps manage heat - so that's a key consideration.

I ordered pretty much everything for a high flow 3" exhaust. The downpipe is a 2.5", so I imagine a 3" from the DP back would be fine yeah? Kinda like pissing backwards through a funnel?
