Final design is in...all comments welcome

Based on a Flip Pak operation..roof opens and folds back, Large RTT pops up (5' x 14') Up 4' to the sleeping bunk (queen size) with a 4" mattress.

Plans include awning track with 14' awning...seperate zip on shower/potty room....slide out 12v fridge,,2000 w Honda generator....2-6v batteries.....30 gal. water tank...tankless HWH with a shower box

Pretty lofty..but I think attainable

oooh, you've gone and done it now...

So when are you cuttin metal? Looks like you've bout finished planning...

Thanks guys...I know it's big, and I was trying to figure a way to do it hard side, but I flunked my engineering degree :p

The answer was right in front of me the whole time. The "mombassa" type folding tent should be relativly easy to do. Although the shear size will offer a bit of a challange, I'm sure someone will be able to make it.

I'm making the inside trailer part with a fold down table and 2 fold down benches. That will offer a place inside to eat for two....and once the table and benches fold down, it will offer a 5' x 7' open space for dressing or w/e. I'm torn to do a pull out kitchen on the tarp side. It's still evolving but I like the direction it's going now. I was not on the previous design.

LOL...as soon as I accidently leave this on my computer screen at home and the :princess: goes.."ohhh..what's that?!"

Someone said here before its easier to ask for forgivness instead of permission...

LOL - that how I got my Harley :D

Now she loves going on rides

What happened to your other trailer? or is this a progression on that platform.

Yes it is 73FJ...

I was originally going to use the box and tent and slide it on a new frame and axle. The more I thought about it the more I thought about what I really liked about some of the other builds I've seen since, and some of the things that really stuck out.

The inside being more usable for living, a bigger area under the flip top closed in, possible slide out kitchen..... a lot more goodies without a whole lot more weight.

Now if I can find someone to manufacter the tent, I think I cand o the rest myself.

Well you have designed a pretty ambitious project there, but after seeing what you did before I think you are up to the task

You may want to rethink the open window above the "potty room" :D.

Looks great. With the Mombassa coming in several sizes you should be able to find one that will work.

Lol...good point!!:flipoff2: Not all of us can afford black/grey water tanks!!

I'm hoping that I can find a custom tent maker(but using the Mombassa type look...or I may buy a real heavy sewing machine and attempt it myself. After much thought about a lifting mechanisum, I think I'll have to install the bows to hold the tent out once the flip is open.

Here's a few (including a cutaway) with the trailer closed and open exposing the inside. Although the plan is not to use the interior for sleeping..I may design the table to fold down.

I've been trying to find someone to make a custom tent similiar to what your looking for and have yet to find something. I have a few people that will make custom "wall" tents like what they used in the boy scouts or military, but nothing that looks, performs like a roof top tent yet. Keep me in mind if you find something please.

BTW, I really like the new concept. Something you can use without ANY setup, or spend a little time and have it completely roomy and comfortable. I'm thinking I'm going to try and design something like the "eclipse" from this Austrailian site: Clicky

Thanks Brandon....I sure will watch, I usually go on there at least once a week. I bet with a little leg work I can find a material supplier simular to the Mombassa type. I'm currently working on a scale mock up for the rear hinge, legs and tent frame...gotta make sure it all opens and folds! :hmm: I even was leaning towards trying a fiberglass lid (that holds the bed and folds open) but went back to aluminum frame covered with ply.

I'm also trying to keep the build criteria to materials that are somewhat readily available

I like this place! Upholstery Supply & Marine Fabric Superstore

Thanks too Mr. Elmo..I'll keep posting with progress and specific materials. Once the mechanics are worked thru for the hinging and tent frame, I think the actual tent itself will be background noise(probably wrong though). I would bet you could find the same off shore business that makes the Mombassa tents would be able to put something like this together without a whole lot of issues. The goal is to have a "slide in" track for tent and for the awning.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day guys!!

Might be easier said than done. There is a rats nest of tent mfgrs based over in Chi Com and they all seem to produce identical products, at least superficially, and none of the online literature shows enough detail to pin anyone down as manufacturer of Product X.

I liked the little design details of the camping labs unit and according to a ARB fella I ran into at an event, it was built by the same folks that built their tents. At least for a time anyway.

Point being I had a project in mind and decided to find that manufacturer and got a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out who makes what for whom. Not saying it can't be done but nobody jumps right out and says yep, that's us.
