Filling the cavity (1 Viewer)

Hey you guys with military trailers... I'm repacking the bearings and as I look inside the hub cavity between the bearings there seems to be quite a bit of room between the inner and outer bearing, 3/4 to 1/2 inch. Do you fill the cavity with grease or just pack the bajesus out of the bearings?. The M100 manual mentions just repacking the bearing and replacing it in the clean hub.

Just wondering if you have any thoughts on assembly and grease quantity inside the hub.

When I was a kid I used to totally fill up the space with grease. Then an old timer told me that wasn't necessary. Later I had to take off a hub that I had packed, and sure enough, the bearings were turning in their own little swirl of grease, but the rest of the grease was immobile. Kinda like twirling a spoon in one spot in a jar of margarine.

So, just pack the bearings well with the proper rated grease for that application.

I only put just enough grease for the bearings, I don't fill the cavity to capacity.

So if you are using bearing buddies then they will only work for the first or outer bearing? (Assuming you don't fill the void with grease).

Apparently its the outer bearing that fails in most cases from what i have read?

Last ones I bought were from China and had no instructions but i was wondering the same thing for the last while as i just installed them on a set of hubs with new bearings.
My guess is not to fill the hubs and that the buddies are for the outer bearing and good maintenance would entail removing the hubs yearly (more often depending on milage and abuse)to re-pack the inner ones.
