Hey, my name is Travis and I'm new to this forum. I have a question about the fender flares on my 1996 FZJ80. I had a small run in my driveway of all places and ended up breaking my rear PS fender flare. I ordered a new one from my Toyota dealer and it came in as the standard black plastic. All my other flares and rocker panels are covered in a gray plastic type covering and I was wondering if anyone knew what this was and where I could get some. Thanks for the help and I will include some pictures if I can figure out how to post them.

welcome to the forum!

yup, these things can be painted. Not sure what kinda of paint, but a body shop guy I talked to sounded like this was not unusual at all. Had also assumed this finish was built in the flare. Looks very soft.

Welcome to the board Travis. You'll find this a great place for all ?'s big and small. I recently broke one of my flares. I only damaged the plastic fasteners on the inside of the flare, so I'm going to attempt to fix with epoxy. How much did dealer charge you for a replacement?

oh yah...include a signature with vehicle description on your profile. I'm not sure this info is needed for your current issue, but it likely will be needed for others.

Actually vehicle year matters on this question. 1991-1994 had fiberglass flares, which crack but don't give much. 1995-1997 had plastic flares, which bend before ripping. Those require a good flex agent in the paint, I would assume.

When you order them, they come unpaninted. This is what I suspect you received -- an unpainted flare. Find a body shop to color match for you and you shoudl be ready to roll.

thanks Norcaldoug that is what i figured. and Perk, the dealer charged me about $100 for the flare and all the hardware. i know that seems like alot but i just cant stand the unfinished look it has right now with only 3 flares

I know what you mean, I couldn't live with that...I love her too much :D
I'm just glad I'll be able to get away with repairing my broken flare with a little epoxy on the fasteners.
