Tonight I went to start my car, turned the key all the way to start, nothing but a click, tried again, the same, third time lucky car fired up straight away! It didnt strain or slowly start, quickly fired. This has happend maybe a handful of times before, but never had to hit the key three times.

What could be the cause of this? Is my starter slowly dying or something else?

Everything else in the car appeared to work as per normal.

Replacing the contactors in the starter motor fixed it when my 1HZ had intermittent start problems like that.

EDIT: Just checked invoice, was solenoid contact set and plunger that were replaced in the starter motor.

I had a mechanic do it for me, but it looked like a very easy job to do, not sure if it will fix your problem or not.

I think that the contacts and/or plunger get dirty and/or worn, and do not make clean/proper contact when activated. I think my mechanic said it can happen when it gets full of muddy water, or just from normal use over time.

Mine would pause before starting as normal, sometimes would need a couple of turns of the key.

This is what the 1HZ starter looks like, solenoid contacts and plunger circled in red...

Sounds like solenoids. Mud will do it. If u are playing in mud u should be carrying a Spare starter and altenator.
