Any thoughts on making this year an overnight trip? Make Saturday's run optional and camp outside Silverton that night. Then do an the "official" Father's Day run on Sunday? That way those who can't escape the whole weekend can still plan to attend.

Edit: Camping location is the north end of Lime Creek Rd. I will head up Friday night and establish a camp somewhere that will accommodate a handful of rigs. There are a few dispersed spots along the road as well as one spur trail early after leaving HWY 550. If those are full I may head in as far as the NFS campground. Please be prepared for primitive camping conditions and bring a bundle of wood for a campfire.

Trail runs both Saturday and Sunday. Anyone is welcome to join for one day or both. If not camping please meet at the intersection of HWY 550 and Lime Creek Rd a 9am. CB channel 12 or HAM 146.460. Trails are TBD based on snow conditions. But anyone on 31" tires should be fine as the harder trails will not melt out by then.

For anyone coming down from the Denver area I strongly suggest using HWY 285/160 to Durango and up. The situation south of Ouray is still a mess on 550.

I'm in, not sure if we'll do an overnight or just the day run... Thoughts on a loop or trail?

I'd like to work Poughkeepsie into the mix somehow. Otherwise I'm open to almost anything. The more off the beat and path the better AFAIK.

Need to scope out a camp spot. Any suggestions? I prefer outside the formal campgrounds if possible.

Dang, I'm working.

I'm trying to work it in. Saturday would be the best day for me to do it.

I can run Saturday should be able to camp Saturday night but will need to head back to Durango early Sunday AM for work.
I would vote for Poughkeepsie, If we set camp back behind Silverton Mountain we could run Corkscrew over to 550 head north towards Ouray to PoughKeepsie turn off and back to camp as one possible option.

I'll try to visit the NFS office tomorrow and get a handle on the private property in that area and scope out a camp area large enough for a small group. Then post back.

I can probably get up there Friday night and claim some space for the group. I like Saturday's trail idea then do something easier on Sunday.

I visited the NFS office today in Durango.

Snow levels in the San Juans are still pretty high. Ophir, Corkscrew, and the Alpine Loop have been plowed. Few other connectors. North facing aspects still have as much as 10 feet of snow on them. The area I original proposed camping falls into that category. They recommended camping at lower elevations in the usual spots. Erureka for example at the bottom of Animas Forks east of Silverton. Or at any of the other low NFS type spots.

I suggest we camp at the north end of Lime Creek Rd. Many dispersed camping areas there. Or we could always goto Ironton bt I have no desire to personally.

other thoughts wold be to look to our south and explore something in Northern New Mexico.

Anyone have any suggestions or opinions?

FYI
US 550 will be closed on Red Mountain Pass Mon-Sat 8:30a-12:30p and 1:30p to 6:30p (open each Sunday and all other times, with single-lane alternating traffic) for rockfall mitigation, likely through June 13.

It probably won't be an issue given we'll be there the 14th, but construction schedules do get extended...

Please feel free to invite your friends to attend with you. Even if they drive a non Toyota. And post up if you are coming.

I talked to a road worker on 550 2 days ago and was told the current crew was being relocated to the mudslide further north. I was told they weren't even close to getting our part of 550 finished. YMMV.

Old Lime Creak Road was a ghost town this past weekend, great flowing waterfalls and the river was banging. Wish I wasn't working. Sounds like you all will have fun.

We will head up there Friday late afternoon. Camp Friday and Saturday nights and head back Sunday morning.

Hey guys, unfortunately I will not be making the trip. The to do list keeps piling up as I'm a week out from a trip to Canada for 9 days. I may stop by Saturday evening as one of my to do's is to go up to Silverton and get my snowmobiles picked up and stored for summer, so I may swing in on my way back. Sorry to be a party pooper... Anyway happy fathers day to all you awesome dads!

Thanks to all who participated and made this another great Father's Day trip. We completed the Alpine Loop on Saturday. Today we decided to break camp early and not do another trail run as no additional trucks had planned to come up from town.

I'll post pictures when I get home.
