Hi All,

Need urgent help- how much should a fan clutch replacement cost?
tired search but no luck

Fan clutch is $135 + shipping. I would say I could do R&R in an hour. So with a $150 shop rate it should be around $300.

@overrovers has yours failed? They seem to hold up really well

Mine just failed
154k on the clock it’s a 2009
Shop quoted 700 (includes slee skid removal)

Why in the world would you need to remove skids for a fan clutch? 4 nuts for the fan, 4 bolts for the clutch. Serp belt can stay on.

The fan bracket is a little more involved. Part 9 below. That has a bearing that can fail as well. Are you sure that's not what they're referring to?

It is much easier to release the tensioner and insert the hold-back pin from the bottom. This ease may be outweighed by having to remove the Slee stuff though..

But why do you need to release the tensioner to remove the fan clutch? The pulley is a separate unit and can stay in place. Would be different if you were replacing serp belt as part of the project, which would be a logical PM but not mentioned in the above.

When you remove the bolts that hold the fan clutch on over its pulley that pulley will rock sideways. It is unlikely to actually come off because of the length of the studs but does put uneven tension across the width of the belt and may damage the fan clutch retaining studs.

The right way to do it is to release tension on the belt.
