i started searching for a 4runner a couple weeks ago and iv hit a wall as to this specific question

iv found that 96-2000 4runners had available factory e-locker in the rear.
is there a model/package this was with? like ALL limiteds had lockers or some SR5s or anything like that?? or is it just hit or miss as to which ones had the locker?

is there a vin number that identifies the vehicle as coming factory with lockers like the 80 series k292 v k294

i am just looking at craiglist ads ebay, autotrader and talking to car dealers, most people dont have any idea what i am talking about when i ask about "a rear locker" and not all the adds include a picture of the dash to the left of the steering wheel....

i understand that i can retrofit the e-locker, and if i cant find a 4runner with a factory one i will do this. but id rather have it stock. so i can invest that $$$ into other goodies.

thanks for the help

you will find more limited with them, only a few SR5 had them.... I dont know why. but when I bought mine all I saw was limiteds with them, but not all of them

I agree that most people don't use the rear diff lock if they have one and many likely don't realize they have one if they do.

I have seen them on base model 4runners with 4cylinder and sticks to limiteds. doesn't really seem to be any rhyme or reason.
usually trying to buy just the differential second hand is pricey as folks know they are worth $. Fair amount of work to retrofit as well so patience looking for a factory one is worth the wait in my opinion.
The only time I have actually used mine is in winter in deep snow and ice as I don't go crawling over rocks with mine.

there might be a vin# for this option but just looking for the dash pushbutton seems the simple way. I found my 96 by luck and was fighting to control my grin when dealing on it cause the rear locker had me sold already..don't think you normally even have to pay more for this option 2nd hand as it may as well be a set of driving lights for all most folks care about it I think. I just dug in my file and the ad for the 96 I bought makes no mention of even having a rear diff lock or antilock brakes... they were more concerned about the remote starter, power mirrors and alloy wheels

At any rate good luck!

All TRD package Tacomas from 95.5-2004 will have the same locker in it.......Prerunners also.
i would rather have the runner but there is a pretty decently priced ex cab 01 trd sitting on a lot here in town i stopped in to check out a 4runner they had but it was an 02 :frown:

thanks luckily i have more time than money so this isnt going to be a fast purchase i still have a 40 to reassemble so i have something to drive once i sell my jetta and REALLY start looking... im just sick of researching cars after the fact.. i want to know exactly what im getting into before i buy

i really want the locker b/c this is going to be a long distance expedition type rig not something i lift to hell and back and throw huge tires under i need max traction not ground clearance

any advice yall can throw my way id be happy to hear it!! thanks!

Hey, my '02 has a rear locker. ;) ;p

but i digress...

I put a factory locker into my sr5. with axle, shipping, factory harness, wiring, brain, etc. it was around $800. Mine was more difficult b/c it had ABS and no wiring harness to plug and play.
IT makes a ton on difference on the trails as anyone can attest to.

Obviously, its cheaper to go the lunchbox locker route.
I would try to find one with the factory locker in it if you can.

I shoulda been more specific too, mine has the factory Toyota E-Locker.

And yes, swapped it in. Came out of a '99 Limited. Just about the easiest swap you could do for a locker (lunchbox lockers are easier I think). I did the entire rear axle swaps all on my own with floor jack and jack stands. I had to swap the fronts between the two 4Runners as well so that I had matched gearing (my '02 had 4.10s, the '99 had 4.30s). The fronts was just a little more tricky, but still not a big deal.

But yes, I would suggest finding a 4Runner with one already in it if you really really want the locker.

as i was reading this I was thinking..didn't he swap that out of the Limited he bought..hmmm

Does that work fine with the 02's traction control running the different gear ratios? Does engaging your rear diff lock disable your antilock or did you need to do something special here?
thanks

Traction control doesn't seem to care what gear ratios I have, they gotta be matched front and rear of course. If I'm not mistaken, the traction control gets its information on wheel speeds from the abs rings at all four corners and makes its calculations based on the differences of speeds between them. If this is the case, then gear ratio in the diffs will have no direct effect on traction control.

I do not have it wired to auto disengage ABS/TRAC/VSC when I engage the rear locker. I have a separate switch that disables that stuff ("andymod"). So I have to flip two switches to lock the rear. No big deal in actuality cause usually by the time I am in need of locking the rear, I have already been offroad and will have already disabled ABS/TRAC/VSC, which I disable the instant I get off pavement.

I'm 99.9% sure that answer is no.....They were all IFS and no, yeah the answer is no, at least in this country.

I have seen a lot of incorrect info on Ebay though. :hillbilly:

thats what i thought... just wanting to double check though

they have a pic of the rear locker and its the one i have seen before so unless the front locker is in some weird place... not on the dash... not by the gear shifter not next to the rear locker... yea.... im guna go w/thats wrong

btw i cant believe the locker was a $350 factory option!!! thats crazy cheap!!!

Unless they have an aftermarket one otherwise, they probably just misunderstood what they have.
