You can take them off, but people often find cloudy scratch marks underneath that may require buffing to remove...since grit and dirt can hide between the flares and the fender paint...

The front two are very easy. The rears are well, a biaattcchhhhh. Some of the trim is held on with 3m tape, and it was like concrete on my '11. like @Markuson said, it leaves scratches that I buffed and even have to have painted/blended. The '09 may not be as bad, but the rubber strip that separates the flare from paint had fallen off two of my flares leaving deep scratches.

Btw, I wouldn't let the flares deter you. But, maybe inspect closely first.
