Does anyone know how much it would cost (about) to rebuild a F motor. Im in Northern California. Im thinking off the top of my head $2500, But I have not real clue on what it would be. Anyone?

This is just shooting from the hip... but I would bet that you could find an F or a 2F that somebody is swapping out for a 350 conversion for a couple hundred bucks... The goal would be to find one that didn't need rebuilding so that it would be a simple swap that you could do yourself. You should not have to spend 2500 bucks to get your engine rebuilt. I know that if you did it yourself you could do it for 1/5 of that if not less... HTH.

I rebuilt my 2F a couple of years ago.
Expect to spend about $2500 total.

The bill from the machine shop was about $1700-1800
-this was bored over .030, cylinders honed, rv cam, new pistons, reconditioned rods, ground the lifters, machined the crank, engine assembly, balanced the rotating assembly, new bearigns, gaskets, oil pump, oiling upgrades, etc.

Then there was all the little things.
-Radiator hoses, rebuilt the rocker arm shaft (new shaft and bushings), clutch kit, motor mounts, etc.

Tiger Stripe is right on target. I had my 2F rebuilt last winter and the machine shop cost was about $1500. I assembled it myself and bought Toyota oil pump and water pump, etc. after Jim Chenoweth carb rebuild, Mark Whatley cam, etc. I probably spent closer to $3K.

A friend of mine had his rebuilt here for 1800.00 at an engine rebuilder, new stuff through out nice job, Larry

I had the block bored and cleaned, the head was slightly surfaced, new valve seats, did nothing to the crank except polish it with some crocus cloth, new pistons, cam and lifters, Toyota bearings and gasket kit, Toyota waterpump
and I have about $1250 in it. I reassembled it myself with the help of a mechanic friend who also ground the valves for $0.00. I had the flywheel surfaced, too. Paid $200 for the motor with 89K on it and probably could have run it with just new seals, but.....you know.

Mudrak would be nice since I work in sonoma now. How far from the square is Mudrak? I saw a blue 40 that said Mudrak improved on it at the body shop next door as I was walking to the warehouse. Seems like a lot of people have good things to say about Mudrak. Any bad reports?

I've never heard a bad word about Gary. I'm in No. Cal, too, and he was the first TLC specialist I spoke with. I'm sure 95% of my newbe questions were D.S., but he was (and continues to be) patient, helpful and right on the money. He's also very active in the local club, which you should get involved with if you're at or near to sonoma county - Pacific Mountain Cruisers -

here's Gary's site: http://www.mudrak.com/ and read the testimonials.

If you guys are willing to pay $2500 for an engine rebuild, than I am going in to business. I rebuilt mine for less than $1500. Bored cyl .040 over, machine crank, new pistons and rings, crank bearings, cam bearings, gaskets, surfaced head, valve job and oil pump, new cam, lifters and the pistons installed on the rods. I put it togeather myself with the FSM and it was a 2 bannana job.

On the way home to Santa Rosa I saw a cruiser that said Mudrak 2 on the LP. I love that cruiser. Its got the factory soft top with a tan paint. Makes me want to sell everything I own to get money for my 40. Hmm now im sounding like a crackhead. Anyway I would rather spend money one having someong who knows what they are doing to build my motor. Im sure I could do it my self but I dont want to spend the time right now. Plus I need to take a loan out to get credit. I dont have any and what better way to get it that on a cruiser. ;)

If I was to rebuild my F here in Atlanta, fully using my shop connections, and doing all labor aside from machine shop work, it would cost me at least $1900.

I spent around $1500 on a rebuild of a 2F. That was just for machining and most internal parts. I assembled the engine myself. Other costs not with the above figure are cam and lifters, hoses, belts, fuel line, fuel pump, water pump, conversion pilot bearing for a SM465. IF you add all this up and other nit noid crap it will run you close to 2 grand. I doubt I will go this route again, in the long run it would have been cheaper to do a V-8 conversion. Plus you have a better base for adding HP if you wish. You can only do so much to a 2F.

True but I like the I6. plus it makes it easy when you need other parts. you dont have to worry about wether it fits. even though there is a ton of info and V8 have been done to death. I still like to keep it 6. I would love to have one V8 and one 6. I would just buy my friends dads 69 with a v8. its nice but he wants 10 grand. Well It sounds like $2500-$3000 is what I should plan on then. I sent an email to Mudrak. I have been talking about this for a long time but now I have a good Job so I think it will happen. well sounds like the ball park has been set. Thanks for all the input.

I heartily disagree.

A cheapo engine conversion cutting corners with a used engine, maybe.

I've worked on enough of those trucks to know I will NEVER own one.

They suck to drive, and suck even worse to work on.

When yopu consider it is already $630 just for the V-8 kit before you even have one dime in the engine, it isn't any cheaper to do a V-8 conversion. Comparing apples to apples, you would have to rebuild the V-8 to have a like new engine like you would have if you rebuilt the I-6. A master engine kit costs $260. A heavy duty radiator is $500. And you don't even have an engine yet!! If you find a decent engine, it will cost you at least $800, if you gind a ragged out POS the machine work will go on forever. So now you are up to $2,215 and you have only a pile of parts. Now take your pile of parts to a machine shop and have them hot tank your "new" V-8 hone the cylinders, mount the pistons, polish the crankshaft and replace your camshaft bearings and you are looking at another $250 at least. Depending on what you can do yourself a conversion done RIGHT will never ever be cheaper than rebuilding an I-6.

Happy Mudrak Customer

I've dealt with Gary at Mudrak a number of times over the past few years. He's up front always, honest, fair and he knows his stuff. I'm not terribly skilled at wrenching and he is always patient and explains everything. The feeling I get is that he loves Cruisers first, making money second. He's actually talked me out of spending money on something he thought was unnecessary. I will continue to go to Mudrak's for my "upgrades". I proudly display my "MUDRAK IMPROVED" sticker.
