All,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I was contacted by James at Extreme Terrain (Yes, a Jeep aftermarket parts company!) that Olde North State had received a $350 grant to help some of our future projects at Uwharrie! I applied for it a while back, as posted on the book of faces, but totally forgot about it.

So, I'm not on the up and up out on the trails due to school work, but I'm sure we'll figure out a way to spend it. There are some stipulations for the money, and of course pictures are needed for the work weekend!

That's really cool. If it doesn't have to be used immediately, will the December meet-up have the biggest amount of people around to work?

that's pretty cool....... Maybe put it towards some equipment needed??

Wow, awesome! Any stipulations as to what it needs to be used for?

That's awesome! Well done Brian!

Grant should be used for the following:
  • Tools needed for trail cleaning/restoration/expansion
  • Food and non-alcoholic beverage for all volunteers
  • Promotional materials used to attract volunteers
  • Miscellaneous trail improvement expenses
non alcoholic??? I'm out....

;)

Pretty cool though.

Money is in the account! Awesome!

@fourtrax what should we put this money towards? Is there some way we can get the forest service's input?

maybe a set of rechargeable cordless tools....impact gun, screwgun, sawzall...etc....I will always have mine but another can be handy and easily rechargeable on the trails with a simple converter....just aa thought....

What about a sign and a garbage bag dispenser at a couple of trail heads. Something like: grab a bag and use it. Please don't litter.

Just a thought. You could probably get a few of them for $350...

Speaking of signs, our sign at Dickie Bell needs to be updated to reflect our name.

As long as we remember to keep the sign full of bags and there is a dumpster near where the sign is installed, I'm game!

Here's a sign!

But I'm sure it has to be NPS approved. ;)

Just got two boxes in the mail today from Extreme Terrain, one was a bunch of T-shirts (no 2X or 3X), and the other was 50 3mil trash bags. So, when ever we decide to make it official, I'll make sure they get out to the outing. We'll have to take pictures galore!

Looked at the commercially available bag dispensers with signs - they're all "dog poop" related. How about these, dotted along the trail at stopping points, screwed to a fencepost with a small sign or sticker:

http://www.amazon.com/simplehuman-Mount-Grocery-Dispenser-Stainless/dp/B007ZF638G/?tag=ihco-20

Uses just regular grocery store bags, which are good enough for most people's lunch/beercans/vomit from riding shotgun with Rice/etc...

A small sticker placed on the unit "Please use a bag and pick up your trash - courtesy of ONSC"

For $10 each, the cost of a sticker (<$1) - and the cost of grocery bags (I know I could contribute several thousand of them - I tend to accumulate them)

We could put 10 or 20 of them in place... Even if there's no trash can around to deposit the full bag into, a full grocery bag of trash on the trail is better than the contents of that bag strewed about all over.

Just thinking out loud.

As someone that's never been to a work day, I can't vouch for the need for tools. I know I have plenty of tools and if cordless battery power is the issue, I'm certain we could load up a generator onto someone's rig and run real man tools. That or a compressor and air tools...

I am all for the trash bags. I just can not get my head around folks that go out to play in the woods and just throw their trash out the window or off an ATV. I just cant comprehend how STUPID a person has to be to just do that, really, you know, mouth breather status. I have several hundred feet of frontage on a main road and I pick up 8-10 pieces of trash a week, on a road. We are talking about trails here, even worse in my eyes.

Rant Over
