I plan on writing this up when the time comes but figured to do alittle prequal to the expedition. There was an excellent article in Toyota trails a few years ago in which an extended family did a trek across parts of africa with an fj45 troopy and 3 or 4 motorcycles. that article has always stuck in my mind.
basically this is the low down. My fathers side of the family has a family reunion just outside of Ithica NY on the 3rd week end of july every year. one of my great Uncles owns a fair chunk of land and as long as he does not build anything permenant his taxes stay low. that hasn't stopped him from putting in a grass tennis court and a variety of other odd ball things but the roads are dirt and nothing is permenant .
so last november my Dad bought a BMW Dakar FS650 and rides for a couple hours every morning unless it is snowing. So he convinced my brother who has a Beull that he uses to comute to work on. to ride with him to the reunion this year. RI to NY and back. basically 2 days up there 3 days there and 2 days back. when it became evident much to my Dad's dismay that they were guna need more than they could carry on there bikes I was called upon to run my fj62 as a support vehicle.
well that gave me a perfect excuse to by a roof top tent and some other stuff. my brother and I wanted to camp the whole way and have convinced my dad this would be the way to go.
so as the expedition itnery stands right now we will be taking back roads from RI to Ithica and stopping at a camp site the first night in the Poconos <sp> somewhere then making it to the family camp an home basing out of there at which point we will switch to more dirt roads and my brother will ride with me in that he has more of a street bike. we will go visit some of my ancesters old dewells some of which are ruins in the woods then take 2 days to get back via back roads.
so my fj62 is going to now be sleeping 3 for 6 nights. I am still on the fence on whether to do the trek with or with out the trailer. having it at camp would be a huge plus and would make camp life that much more civilized in the extra camp gear we could bring but I will be trying to keep pace with motorcycles and a loaded down cruiser will already be slowthe added weight of the trailer might be too much. we will see I think I am going to mount the tent up top on the cruiser and see how easy it is to get in and out and base my decision on that.
I am hoping that the outcome of this expedition is more of them. my brother is already planning on switching to a dual sport bike prolly a KTM so the future treks will most likely have more of an offroad focus but we are thining a run to northern Maine or something like that.
my plan is to discuss planning stuff on this thread then post up a expedition report during if possible or after the trek.

the KTM is the way to go! for sure. forget the BMW. does your dad go to www.advrider.com ? killer site.

IMHO you should bring the trailer, its what its there for man. also, dont you want 2 people in the tent and one in the truck? this means that you will need to bring the trailer for all the gear as it would be a pita to move it all and then sleep in the truck.

and... i am bored at work too so i edited your logo... i didnt notice your vehicle and bikes at first so i moved em up, hope you dont mind!

Sounds like a great trip! For my 2cents....I too agree with peepers and I think you should use your trailer as well. Have a great time!

Peepers you funny too late on the logo my boss was on leave today so I got them all printed. kind of a shame I won;'t be able to keep them on my truck long term in that it would be pretty obvious where they came from ...
I decided to take the trailer. this week end i will finish its build up after it get one more load of rocks tomorrow.
I have some fab projects for the week end for the trailer. I need to make a rack that is removeable to mount the tent too and I need to make a rear camping stabilizer like in the second image down on this site

I got the square tubing at lunch today. so just need to clean up some other stuff and it should be good to go.
I started thinking about how much of a pig my brother is and thought there is no way 3 of up wil be able to live out of just the truck the trailer will let us home base out of during the week end so now I just got to get it all ready
